The USN Swimming Tigers traveled to Ensworth in a dual meet on Tuesday. The USN boys won their meet, 104-55, while Ensworth’s girls defeated USN 109-53, giving Ensworth a narrow combined team win (164-157).
USN’s boys' efforts were led by Leo Frein and William Grobmyer, who won two events each. Frein won the 500 freestyle and 100 backstroke, and Grobmyer took the 100 freestyle and 100 breaststroke. Both boys were under the state qualifying times in each of their swims, and Leo’s 500 freestyle earned a spot on the USN all-time Top 10 list. Owen Block also took home an individual win in the 50 freestyle. USN also won all three boys’ relays thanks to contributions from these three, as well as Dhruv Reddy, Mark Luschen, Sawyer Beckwith, Arnav Reddy.
Other notable swims from the boys came from Jack Wellons and Luschen, who each earned two new region qualifying times in the 200 and 50 freestyles.
On the girls’ side, Ensworth took advantage of USN’s limited numbers, capturing 9 of 11 events. USN’s event wins came from Caroline Cramer in the 50 freestyle, and the 200 freestyle relay of Kara Grace Hess, Ivy Cochran, Cramer, and Olivia Schwarz.
Still, there were a few strong individual races in the process. Olivia's 200 IM came down to the final touch; her aggressive effort paid off with an in-season best and a spot on USN’s all-time Top 10 list. And Ray Nakagawa earned a new Region qualifying time in the 100 butterfly and swam a best time in the 100 backstroke by three seconds.
Some of the Tigers will return on Saturday to swim at Hume-Fogg’s Senior Day. The rest will resume training in preparation for a slew of meets in January before we begin our championship meet preparations.
