Swimming Tigers open season in unscored meet

Justin Karpinos
The USN high school swimming team competed on Saturday in an unscored meet with Montgomery Bell Academy, Harpeth Hall, and Brentwood High School.  After six weeks of training under our belts, we were excited to see what our first full team meet looked like.

The USN girls put up a number of impressive performances, led by Anna Hulan.  Anna won the 200 IM and finished third in the 100 breaststroke.  Her 200 IM time elevated her to 6th on the school’s all-time Top 10 list.  Anna’s 50 breaststroke relay split on the 200 medley and anchor leg on the 400 freestyle relay also earned spots on the list.

Olivia Schwarz had two strong races, finishing second in both the 200 freestyle and 100 freestyle in strong in-season times.

All of Anna and Olivia’s swims were well under the state qualifying times.  Other swimmers who earned state cuts included Kara Grace Hess (50 freestyle and 100 butterfly), Olivia Barbieri (100 butterfly and 100 backstroke) and Tate Barbieri (50 freestyle).    Olivia B. and Kara Grace also cracked the top 10 list with their medley relay splits as well.

Notably, our girls’ 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relays were the fastest ever by a USN team in a dual meet, which is a promising sign for the potential of what they could do later on in the season.

Other standout swims came from Margot Ross, who beat the girls’ region cut in her first 200 freestyle, and Iris Li, who swam best times in both her races.

On the boys’ side, illness impacted our ability to really fill out a lineup.  But some individual swims still emerged as promising signs of potential for the season.  The boys were led by Leo Frein finished second in the 100 backstroke and was just off his best time, earning a spot on the USN all-time top 10 list.  His 200 IM also earned a spot on the list, and both his swims were under the state qualifying time.

Other strong performances came from Owen Block, who swam two lifetime bests in the 50 freestyle and actually got faster as the meet went on, and our 9th grade trio of Sawyer Beckwith, Izzy Rose, and Mick King, who all had two big improvements in both their races.

The Tigers’ next meet is on December 7, when we travel to Ensworth.
