Youngest Tigers Kick off the Season
Eight members of the USN high school swimming team opened the season on Saturday at the Middle TN Swim Club’s Freshman Invitational. After three good weeks of training, we were excited to see some performances from the newest members of our squad, and for them to get some good racing experience under their belts. It was a productive day all around, with the Tigers winning the small but spirited meet.
On the girls’ side, individual event wins came from Anna Hulan (200 IM, 100 freestyle, 100 breaststroke), Olivia Barbieri (100 butterfly, 100 backstroke), and Tate Barbieri (50 freestyle). Both girls’ relays took first place, thanks to these three and Ray Nakagawa, who swam backstroke on the medley relay and added a leg in the 200 freestyle relay as well.
The USN boys did not win any individual events, but Leo Frein earned two second-place finishes in the 200 freestyle and 100 backstroke, and a third place finish in the 50 freestyle. Mick King added a second place finish in the 100 breaststroke, and Sawyer Beckwith finished second in the 100 freestyle. These three were joined by Izzy Rose on the winning 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays.
Along the way, Anna, Leo, and Olivia earned state qualifying times, and Sawyer picked up his first Regional qualifying time. Also, Anna (50 breaststroke relay split, 50 freestyle) and Olivia (50 butterfly relay split, 100 backstroke) earned times on the USN all-time Top 10 list.
The full team will have its first meet on Saturday, November 13, as the Tigers take on MBA, Harpeth Hall, and Brentwood Academy in a double-dual.
