Tigers seal up boys'+ combined division championships. Grobmyer, Shepard, Cochran earn new qualifying times
The USN HS swimming Tigers welcomed Hume-Fogg, MLK, Hillsboro HS, and St. Cecilia to the Vanderbilt Rec Center on Tuesday for our Senior Day meet. The meet was scored as a double dual, and the Tigers won all the matchups contested, meaning that the boys’ and combined teams earned division championships. The USN girls will likely finish as the division runners-up, depending on how some tiebreakers emerge.
Senior Abby Liff opened her final meet with a win in the 200 freestyle, pulling ahead in the second half of the race to take the win Sophomore Kursten Griffin had an individual win as well, taking the 100 freestyle.
On the whole, the USN girls’ team swam significantly better than at the Snowball Invite on Saturday. Junior Lucy Mauries improved her lifetime best by three seconds in the 200 freestyle, and added a lifetime best in the 100 backstroke as well. Eleanor Shepard earned a new Region qualifying time in her 100 butterfly debut, and Caroline Cramer and Ivy Cochran showed some improved speed in the 50 freestyle. Harper Johnston earned a lifetime best in the 100 breaststroke, where Ivy also picked up a new Region cut.
In the wins over Hume-Fogg and MLK, the boys’ team battled shorthanded, with two swimmers missing for conflicts and illness. As a result, we weren’t able to contest all the relays we’d like to, but the boys were similarly strong and much better than on Saturday as a team.
Ian Brash followed up his Snowball wins in the 50 and 100 freestyles with two more wins in this meet as well. His 50 freestyle time was just .12 seconds off his own school record, an excellent dual meet swim, and his 100 was just shy of cracking the 50. Barrier. William Grobmyer and Milo Schumann had great race in the 200 freestyle, with both earning best times and William adding a new State cut to his quiver. Milo returned shortly afterwards to win the 100 butterfly, and William won the 100 breaststroke. Sage Sasaki was also a double winner, taking the 200 IM and 100 backstroke in convincing fashion, and Jacob Rothman captured the 500 freestyle.
The meet concludes the Tigers’ regular season; at this point, we begin preparing for the Region and State championship meets.
