Swimming Tigers Return to Racing at Snowball Invite

Liff, Griffin, Brash, Sasaki, and the boys' 200 free relay earned event wins. The boys and combined teams finished second, while the girls earned third.
The USN swimming Tigers traveled to Sewanee, TN on Saturday to compete at the Snowball Invitational. This meet has been a good benchmark for where our team is in past years, and an excellent chance to shake off the rust of training and return to competitive racing. The USN combined team finished second out of 13 teams, with 263 total points, behind Ravenwood High School’s 333, but ahead of Father Ryan’s 230.

The USN girls’ team finished third overall with 132 points, behind Ravenwood (185) and Father Ryan (150). They were led by senior Abby Liff, who won three individual events: the 200 freestyle, the 100 breaststroke, and the 50 breaststroke AFTER swimming a practice earlier in the day before the meet. Abby’s 200 freestyle time earned her a spot on the USN all-time top 10 list, notably.

Sophomore Kursten Griffin repeated her three-win performance from a year ago at this meet, winning the 50 and 100 freestyles and the 100 IM. Abby and Kursten also combined with Lucy Mauries and Ivy Cochran to finish second in the 200 freestyle relay, and with Lucy and Lauren French to finish third in the 400 freestyle relay.

The USN boys’ team earned 131 points to take second behind Ravenwood’s 148, narrowly beating the host St. Andrew’s Sewanee squad (117).

Senior Ian Brash won both the 50 and 100 freestyles, earning a lifetime best in the 100 free (49.63). Sage had an event win of his own, defending his 2019 title in the 200 IM comfortably. Ian and Sage joined with Stefan Pretorius and William Grobmyer to win the 200 freestyle relay with a strong in-season race. Ian also posted the second-fastest 50 freestyle relay split in school history anchoring the 200 medley relay (21.47). That relay, which also featured Stefan, Sage, and Arnav Reddy, finished third behind SAS and Ravenwood.

Freshman Milo Schumann also posted two second-place finishes in the 50 and 100 breast, and Stefan took third place in both the 50 and 100 backstrokes.

Best times and new qualifying times were hard to come by at this meet, but we were pleased with the way the team battled and are hopeful that the racing experience will pay dividends as we approach the championship season.
