On Saturday, November 22, the Middle School Quiz Bowl team traveled to Bowling Green, Kentucky, to face outstanding teams that are among the best in the entire country. Against this tough competition, USN placed second and earned an invitation to the National Academic Quiz Tournaments' National Championships in May.
Gray Ezell ’31, Elliott Karpinos ’31, Lucas Lupu ’31, and Neel Sinha ’31 had a strong start, winning their first four matches by an average score of 525 to 132. In the fifth round, they faced Meyzeek Middle School of Louisville, which had a team place third in the country last year. The strong Mezeek team got off to a fast start, taking a 195-70 lead. The USN players did not give up and fought back to win 365-310. In the playoffs, they won their first two matches before facing Meyzeek again in the finals. This time Meyzeek won 405 to 250. USN took home the second-place trophy.
All three teams from the deep USN squad had great performances, finishing strong and demonstrating resilience with come-from-behind victories. Elliott Carlo ’32, Sam Jewett ’32, Avi Kerrigan ’31, and Collins Spangler ’31 won their last two playoff games to place 13th at the tournament. In the final playoff game, Glasgow Middle School A was leading 170 to 145 with just two questions to go. USN got the next question to pull within 25 points. Then they powered the final question and got all three bonuses, winning 190 to 170.
Mila Kennedy ’32, Anisha Nachnani ’32, Indy O’Hare ’32, and Eliana Wolf ’32 also won their last two playoff games. In each game, they came from behind to win. In their penultimate playoff game, Glasgow Middle School B led 100-10. But USN answered seven out of the final eight questions to pull off the win 170 to 130. In the final playoff game, Franklin-Simpson Middle School was winning 90-30, but USN got the final two questions and went five out of six on the bonuses to win by the slimmest of margins, 100-90.
Individually, Lucas was the tournament's top scorer. Playing in his first tournament, Sam was the ninth highest scorer overall and the highest 6th grader.
It takes a lot of volunteers to run a Quiz Bowl tournament. Noam Lupu, Maria Rivera, and Michael Wolf fulfilled our volunteer responsibilities. We could not have had so much fun and success without them. Thank you!

In an inspiring new initiative, USN's health care career spotlight, organized by Ruchika Ramachandran ’27 and Yvonne Wang ’27, brought a wealth of alumni back to the school for an evening of shared expertise and personal stories. This first-of-its-kind event was a great example of the power of connection, mentorship, and community evident throughout the USN community.
