USN’s Middle School Quiz Bowl team took second and sixth places at the 12th Annual Gallatin Middle School Fall Invitational on Saturday, October 21. As a result, the National Academic Quiz Tournaments invited USN to send two teams to the Middle School National Championship in May. After competing against high schools last month, USN’s Middle School Quiz Bowl competed against middle school teams from across Tennessee and Alabama in a tournament featuring 47 teams.

Basil Broemel ’28, Matthew Golann ’29, Asher Huffman ’29, and Liam Mooney ’28 won their first two matches 675 to 0 and 620 to 0. They won all five of their preliminary rounds. Three playoff victories sent them to the semifinals where they beat a strong team from Merrol Hyde Middle School 480 to 195. In the finals, they lost to Brentwood Middle School’s team in a thrilling final.

Elliot George ’29, Garrett Northwall ’28, Clio Cherry-Pulay ’29, and Vihaan Sinha ’29 also went 5-0 in the preliminary rounds. They won three play-off games before running into Arab Junior High School from Alabama to place sixth.

Elinor Bird ’29, Lucas Little ’29, Eesha Nachnani ’28, and Annie Williamson ’28 went three and two in the preliminary rounds. In the playoffs, they went on to make it to the quarterfinals of the Silver Division.

Maya Arsovski ’30, Rose Doyle ’30, Reya Roy ’30, Katie Jane Bruehl ’30, Phoebe Schneider ’30, Kayva Shah ‘30, and Neel Sinha ’31 competed in their first inter-scholastic competition. Despite facing much older teams, both teams had strong playoff runs. Maya, Rose, and Reya made it to the semifinals of the Copper Division. Katie Jane, Phoebe, Kavya, and Neel went all the way to the semifinals of the Tin Division.

Individually, Liam, Basil, and Annie were the fourth, ninth and 17th high scorers of the almost 200 competitors in the tournament.

All players were excited when super fan and Middle School Head Dr. Shavon Davis-Louis showed up to watch them buzz. They appreciated High School Coach Dr. Mukerji and Evan Giles for serving as readers. They want to thank the many parents who helped by escorting them and keeping score.

In November, the Middle School Quiz Bowl team will take four teams to White Station High School in Memphis for another tournament on Saturday, November 3 and Sunday, November 4. Also, the team will host the Second Annual Welcome to Quiz Bowl Tournament at USN on Saturday, November 11.
