USN Tiger Athletics

Tiger AthleticsCommunity Through Competition

Students in grades K-5 develop basic athletic skills during PE classes that help lay a foundation for competition, instill confidence, and support an active lifestyle from an early age. In grades 6-12, there are fall, winter, and spring athletic seasons comprising over 35 sports teams.

Through athletic competition, students can develop greater knowledge of their physical potential, the self-confidence that comes from exceeding personal limits, and a deeper understanding of the joys and responsibilities of being part of a team. A strong collaboration among coaches, players, parents, and staff results in the best experience for all students. In our fields and in our gymnasiums, students learn goal setting, self-discipline, personal sacrifice, and winning and losing with grace.

  • Laying a Foundation in Lower School

In Lower School, a spirit of cooperation takes precedence over competition. Students develop fine motor skills and lay a foundation for future athletic pursuits during daily PE classes.

USN provides parents with information about local recreational league play opportunities for their children and may, where possible, help bring parent coaches and interested children together.
  • New Experiences in Middle School

In fifth grade, students benefit from a rotation of PE offerings that allow them to familiarize themselves with Middle School's competitive sports programs. Beginning in sixth grade, as students make the transition to interscholastic competition, coaches look to build competitive teams. Where interest exceeds roster space, the school makes every effort to identify other options for students, with the goal of providing the appropriate level of competition and/or skill development for each child.

Nearly 85% of Middle School students participate in one or more sports throughout the year. Middle School sports practices take place during the school day, and students who do not play a sport are required to take a PE elective. Though electives may vary some by semester, students always have a minimum of four courses to choose from and options typically include time in the fitness center, field games, walking, or yoga.
  • Achieving Goals in High School

Athletics at USN serves as a source of school pride. An integral part of many students' experience, USN provides a variety of athletic opportunities. Our most competitive teams can be found at the High School level where varsity teams compete for conference, regional, and state championships while maintaining the schools' athletic philosophy. As opportunities arise, junior varsity and freshman teams are created.

In High School, approximately 75% of students participate in one or more sports throughout the year. High School sports practices take place after school, and students who do not participate in at least one sport are required to take one semester of PE per academic year.
  • Athletics After Edgehill

It is common to have five or more student-athletes sign college athletic commitment letters each year. USN has 21 alumni participating in their chosen sport at the collegiate level from the Classes of 2018 through 2022.

Find out more about the accomplishments and plans of our student-athletes.
  • Sports Medicine On Site

USN employs a full-time, on-site athletic trainer to work closely with athletes and coaches to manage all aspects of student-athletes’ medical care including preventative medicine, injury care, and recovery.
  • Join Tiger Club

USN’s athletic booster club, Tiger Club, helps pay for upgrades to our athletic facilities, coordinates concessions sales, and sponsors our sports recognition evenings. Membership is $100 per household per academic year and includes free admission to all regular season athletic events.
