Shadowing the District Attorney’s Office

by Arushi Mehta ’20

Arushi walked the courthouse with Assistant District Attorney Kate Melby during the junior shadowing program.
Spending three days in the professional world is an unparalleled opportunity that I am so glad I was able to participate in. For my three days, I chose to shadow Kate Melby, an assistant district attorney who works in Davidson County Criminal Court Division I.

One thing I learned for sure is that the courtroom is nothing like what you would see on TV. The job not only entails being in court from 8:30 a.m. to whenever they finish the docket but also requires meticulous preparation and research. Each day, I would observe courtroom proceedings and watch as an attorney would cross-examine witnesses and the judge would deliberate. After court, we would head back to her office to prepare for the next day.

I learned that no matter how much or how little is going on, there is always more work to be done. Her office is full of large binders full of information and documents pertinent to her cases. Watching court in session is always intriguing on television but often unrealistic. In real life, it is really easy to see the amount of work that goes into it and the reality of how decisions are made daily. It broadened my view and helped me see outside of the high school bubble. This shadowing program is truly a one of a kind experience.
