All three divisions sent students to the Regional Team Chess Championship. Lower School and High School placed seventh and second, respectively, at the state tournament during Spring Break.
USN was strongly represented and turned in great results at the Regional Team Chess Championship held earlier this month at Montgomery Bell Academy.
Our Primary Team of Krish Nachnani ’28, Ishaan Nachnani ’28, Daniel Law ’27, Matthew Golann ’29, and Teague McMillan ’27 turned in an awesome result, winning second place, and stamped a ticket for the state championship. Losing only one match out of four to a much older and more experienced Ensworth team, the Primary Team won matches against Overbrook, Kenrose, and Cumberland Elementary.
Our Elementary Section squad of Stewart Hall ’25, Joshua Muellenbach ’25, Daniel Gerregano ’24, and Laura Grace Hirt ’24 just missed out on the state tournament in seventh place with two wins, one draw, and one loss. It took three wins to qualify. Their victories over Lockeland Elementary, Harpeth Valley Elementary, and a draw against St. Paul were strong results and our only loss came to the eventual champions of our region, Clovercroft Elementary.
Then, for the first time in many, many years, USN fielded a team of High School students. Kunaal Saggi ’21, Wei Dai ’20, Joshua Esquivel ’20, and Esha Karam ’21 eked out a fourth-place finish and a trip to the state championship.
In the B-Team Division, USN fielded two teams. The Tigers Team with Evan Hauser ’25, Connor Harris ’25, Maya Guha ’24, Matthew Golann ’25, and Loch McMillan ’28 finished in sixth place. Our Maroon Team of Annika Abramson ’29, second grader Eesha Nachnani ’28, and third graders Daniel Law ’27 and Teague McMillan ’27 also represented our school respectably with an even 2-2 score.
At the state championship held Saturday, March 24 at Tennessee Tech University, USN K-3 Primary Team successfully finished in seventh place. Congratulations to Krish Nachnani ’28, Ishaan Nachnani ’28, Eesha Nachnani ’28, and Will Nichols ’28. Our High School team, which amazingly included fifth grader Stewart Hall this time around, tied for second in the state. Way to go USN Chess Club! Congratulations!
