Boys' Ultimate Sizzles at Deep Freeze Tournament

HS Boys Ultimate traveled to Chattanooga this past weekend for the annual Deep Freeze tournament, which draws the best teams from across the Southeast. The boys focused on growing as a team and developing mental toughness throughout the weekend. Some of the players said it was the most fun they’ve had at a tournament so far in their careers.

We began Saturday morning in calm conditions against Forge, an all-star team composed of players from Birmingham, Alabama. The boys were ready for this game, as they’d played poorly against Forge at the MBA tournament in early February.

Forge jumped out to an early lead in the first half, but USN ran off multiple points in a row to tie the game on a long backhand from junior Tate Kloeppel to sophomore Shai Rice. Shai was strong on offense in this game, scoring all of our goals except for one. Freshman Manu Shukla - playing in his first ever competitive Ultimate game - caught the other. In the end, Forge were able to hold on for the win. However, the team played a much better game than they did against Forge at MBA.

The day became windier and windier and the boys saw plenty of zone defense for the rest of the day (three more games). As most teams in Tennessee now run zone, the team enjoyed the opportunity to get plenty of reps against the type of defense they’ll likely see later in the year.

After a catered dinner from Moe’s and a night’s rest, the boys were ready for more the next morning. Our first game on Sunday pitted us against Holy Family Catholic, a perennial national powerhouse and the tournament’s number one seed.

HFC jumped out to a quick lead, their players expecting an easy win. HFC were raucous on the sidelines, clearly very confident. One of the players actually yelled, “Did somebody say easy win?”

He was wrong. USN called a timeout to slow HFC’s momentum and take a breath. Although HFC were still able to pull out the win in the end, USN played up to their potential and were able to stand up to one of the best teams in the country.

The boys played Ravenwood in the last game of the tournament on Sunday afternoon. In a windy, muddy, rainy game, the USN boys were able to grab a big win to finish off the weekend. As the team often practices in similar conditions at the River Campus, they felt right at home.

The boys set the goal of being a better team at the end of the weekend than at the beginning, and they certainly accomplished that. Performances from newcomers Manu and Blake Perdikis - who made several athletic defensive plays - were particularly noteworthy. Captains Ben Harris, Jake Wolfson, and DJ Lewis displayed poise and leadership all weekend.

The team will be back in action this Saturday, March 3, playing league games against Ravenwood and Franklin at the River Campus. The first game begins at 8:30 a.m. Next weekend - March 10 and 11 - both the boys and girls teams will host our home tournament, the River Campus Classic.
