Wow,
I truly don't even know where to begin. I already know I'm going to struggle to write this email because I can't quite put in to words all of the things that we saw, learned, tried, adapted to, overcame, etc... The other part to that equation is when you sped 12+ hours at a pool you're brain gets really mushy! But nevertheless, I'll give it a shot.
Prelims
I'll start with stats. 90% of our swimmers set at least one new personal best today. Nineteen of you set 2+ personal bests today. We also broke four USN Middle School swim records! Not a bad day at the office if I do say so myself.
Below are a few moments that won't show up on paper but really made my day:
1) During the girls 100 yd freestyle a girl from a different school false started and swam her entire race under the assumption she was actually racing. When she finished in what she thought was 1st place in her heat, she was greeted with the bad news that she was going to have to repeat her swim in about 2 minutes. With a dejected look on her face the girl climbed out of the pool only to be greeted by the ever optimistic Olivia Barbieri who offered up this gem, "I just want you to know that had that counted, that would have been SUCH a good swim!" The girl couldn't help but smile...
2) In an event that is often ignored and put last in the meet Emma Schwarz shined so bright. After getting up on the blocks in a panic, fearing she was going to miss her race, Emma dove in to her first lap of the 500 yd freestyle only to have her goggles fill with water. For the next 7 minutes, Emma ping ponged off the lane lines, executed flip turns at one point with just a toenail, to earn herself a 20 second improvement from a race she has only swam twice in her life. With blood shot eyes and an exhausted body, Emma's perseverance was stuff movies are made of.
3) Jack Wellons, the consummate teammate. If you didn't get a high five, fist bump, or "good job" from Jack today than you were probably weren't at Sportsplex. Jack's power of positivity is exactly the attitude and mindset we love to see!
Finals
Having to swim in multiple events his hard enough, having to come back after a few hours is even harder. It's easy to settle into the stiffness your body feels, and accept that you might just not be that fast...but not us. In fact all of the four school records were set in finals.
Below is a way to quick recap of finals:
1) Girls 200 Medley relay beating their seed time by 3+ seconds...
(all lifetimes bests: Olivia 32.32, Eleanor 38.05, Anna 32.00, and Caroline 28.88)
2) Jacob R. waiting as an alternate for the 200IM & gets a chance to swim. So what does he do, he sets a new personal best time.
3) Kursten breaks the 50 and 100 freestyle records for USN MS.
4) Tate double pr in 100 back and breaks the 100 back record
5) The obliteration of the girls 400 free relay record by 30 seconds by Olivia S, Anna, Caroline, and Kursten. Anna split a new lifetime best of 1:04, Caroline did the same at 1:07, as did Olivia at 1:05.
Needless to say these are just a few of the MANY highlights from the day. I cannot say thank you enough to all the parents who were crazy enough to join me at sportsplex at 7 a.m. to reserve bleacher space for our crew. Thank you for bringing all of the goodies for the kids.
Well deserved shoutouts to Mr. and Mrs. Douglas our swim super fans, Dr. Durnan, Coach Miller, a very excited and optimistic Coach Karpinos and any other staff that I just was oblivious to. Thank you for your support!
You all continue to amaze us each time you're given the chance. I can't wait to see what next weekend will bring in what will be an ultra competitive HVAC championship. Everyone has now seen what each team can do best. Little do they know that our best is yet to come!
