Fifth graders take USN’s lead on Ms. Cheap’s Penny Drive

Drop your coins and cash in a tin in a fifth-grade classroom to benefit Second Harvest Food Bank.
The Fifth Grade Community Service Group is collecting spare change for an annual penny drive to benefit Second Harvest. Spearheaded by Tennessean columnist Mary Hance, Ms. Cheap’s Penny Drive raises money to fill emergency food boxes, food pantries, and backpacks for when children are away from free lunches at school.

Tin cans are in fifth grade classrooms, and the Community Service Group hopes to raise enough money to cover 624 meals. So far they have collected enough for 212 meals, and they will sell hot chocolate in the Sperling Cafeteria next week to reach their goal. Anyone at USN is able to contribute pennies, nickles, dimes, quarters, and dollar bills to the penny drive by dropping it off in a fifth-grade classroom by Wednesday, Jan. 31.
