International Club celebrates Day of the Dead at Cheekwood

by Arcelia Vazquez, Lower School Spanish teacher

With chalk and dyed rice, students and Nashville artists make designs for El día de los Muertos.
The International Club celebrated the Day of the Dead at Cheekwood on Saturday, Oct. 28.

Nashville artist José G. Vera, known as Pepe, created USN’s tapete from painted rice, and students used sidewalk chalk to make a design in the parking lot of the botanical garden. The students who participated were Arjun Dasari, Amanda Ding, Annie French, Clayton Jelsma,  Shriya Karam, Hannah Laibinis, Arushi Mehta, Neha Mehta, and Amara Payne.

El día de los Muertos is celebrated traditionally in Bolivia, Peru, Honduras, Nicaragua, Mexico, and El Salvador, as a day to pray for and remember family and friends who have died as well as to celebrate life.
