Art exhibition shares immigrants’ perspective

A traveling exhibit of artwork shares the experiences of refugees on canvas. Opening reception is 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 2 in the Tibbot Gallery.
Experience a visual tribute to resilience, strength, and courage in “The Columbus Crossing Borders Exhibit” on display in the Tibbott Center Gallery Thursday, Nov. 2 and Friday, Nov. 3. This traveling exhibit is the work of 34 artists, including Nashvillians James Kuol Makuac and Lanie Gannon, who illustrated the stories of immigrants on canvas. Several pieces share glimpses of the arduous journeys of refugees and what it was like to flee war, terror, and persecution in an effort to inspire understanding of, compassion for, and support of immigrants.

During the opening reception from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 2, showings of the gallery's accompanying 50-minute documentary "Breathe Free" are at 5 and 6 p.m.

The creator of the project, Laurie VanBalen, and several artists will be on hand during the gallery opening and throughout next week to speak with Middle and High School students on their artwork.

“When offered the opportunity to exhibit ‘Columbus Crossing Borders’ and to share the documentary film, ‘Breathe Free’ at the Tibbott Center Gallery, the Art Department was thrilled,” said ceramics teacher Delia Seigenthaler. “To be able see the faces from our immigrant and refugee communities, to hear in the documentary the voices recalling stories and their first hand accounts of the many struggles of war and unbearable conditions that forced them out of their home countries, to share 34 paintings in response to the moving stories, and to expose our students to an artists' perspective on the topic of immigration and the world refugee crisis was an offer that we felt we couldn't pass up.”
