Operations staff wrap up summer projects

Campus improvements include new floors in the Sperling Gym and Cafeteria and changes on the Edgehill lawn.
While students and faculty enjoyed their summer break, Operations staff revved up their work at 2000 Edgehill Ave. to make improvements to USN's main building and annexes.

Their work began the week after school ended with arborists removing a 92-year-old scarlet oak tree from the Edgehill lawn. A significant portion of the tree canopy was dead, and Director of Operations Erik Mash said he consulted with "trusted tree surgeons," who found the danger from the aging tree's limbs was too great for them to nurse the tree back to health. Instead, it was cut down and its wood will be used for carpenters to build furniture for USN. Former Head of High School Steve Robins, who teaches a wood working class, also will carve some of the wood into bowls. Mash said the remaining maple, oak, and sycamore trees in the Edgehill lawn likely will benefit from the space now available from the removal of their counterpart.

Also on the front of the main building, the western porch near the Hassenfeld Library was renovated to replace chipping limestone and restore a rusting railing, which is original to the building that opened in 1925.

The Sperling Gym's 28-year-old floor endured enough wear and tear — as well as water damage — for new hardwood. The new gym floor features new staining schemes and floor graphics. New score boards will be installed in Sperling in the coming weeks. Sections of Sperling Cafeteria's linoleum floor also have been replaced with stained concrete, and the building has three new heating and air conditioning units.

Still underway is work on the swimming pool, believed to be the oldest indoor pool in Nashville still in use. The saltwater pool was drained in July for its walls to be replastered. It is expected to reopen in mid-September, well ahead of the Tigers' swim season.
