HS Boys' Soccer Team Secures 2-seed for District Tournament, Celebrates SeniorsThe boys' soccer team secured the number two seed heading into the district tournament with a 9-1 win over Davidson Academy on Tuesday evening. The Tigers' final home game also served as Senior Night for the four seniors on this year's team. Sykes Cargile, Isaac Eskind, Jonah Hoffman, and Henry Rieniets were all recognized at halftime for their contributions over their high school careers.
Cargile and Hoffman each tallied a goal in the game, and Rieniets gave up just one goal. Sophomore Max Jefferson matched a school record by netting six goals for the Tigers, and Manuel Guevara added the final score.
The Tigers will face Davidson Academy again on Thursday evening in the first round of the district tournament. Game time is 5pm.
HS Girls' Tennis Secures 2-seed in Region
On a windy day, our eight Tigers traveled to Battle Ground Academy to battle for the number 2 seed in what will be our upcoming Sub State Match of the State Tournament. BGA had a strong record and, on paper, was predicted to be our toughest local district competition.
Once our Tigers were on the loose, they clawed their way to 4 out of 5 singles wins and 2 out of 3 doubles wins. This gives the team a 7-1 record in our district, losing only to district foe Webb Knoxville, a multiple State Tournament Champion.
In line 1 singles, Talia Stein busted out of the gates with a first set win, dropped the second set, and fought hard to win the third set tie breaker. Mia Pretorius, Sonali Dasari, and Shriya Karam won at Line 2, Line 4, and Line 5 singles in straight sets. Line 3 singles saw Rebekah Doochin back in the line up after missing several days of school and a couple of matches last week with illness--a tough match that tipped the other way.
Doubles found Jordyn Sheats and Lilly Urness taking the first win against BGA, setting the tone for the other doubles teams. Rebekah and Shriya took another doubles point 8-1. Sonali and Mia played great doubles scramble points to grab the next win over BGA. Ella Cameron and Talia ran up against a strong duo at line 1 doubles, fighting hard, but eventually dropping the point to BGA.
The team will be back in action this weekend in the Region Individual Tournament at Sewanee on Friday and Saturday.
HS Boys' Tennis Secures 2-seed in Region, Celebrates Seniors
The boys' tennis team celebrated their seniors on Monday afternoon with a big region win over Battle Ground Academy. The Tigers won four of five singles and two of three doubles on the day without two of their top line players, George Corzine and Arjun Dasari. Jackson Schnelle stepped up to the plate and took on the Line 1 singles challenge, dropping a tough three set match. Lebo Hunter picked up the win at Line 2 and the Tigers rolled through the remainder of the Wildcats' lineup with wins from Joseph Weil, London Eckhard, and Colin Moore.
The Tigers dropped one of the doubles matches, as Lebo Hunter and Clayton Jelsma were turned back in the eight game pro set at 8-5, but the Tigers won the match 5-2 to secure the two seed in the region and will host Substate.
The boys will compete in the Region Individual Tournament this weekend at Sewanee.
Baseball Season Ends in District Tournament
The baseball season came to an end on Monday in the district tournament as the Tigers lost to host Battle Ground Academy, 11-3. The team was led by their seniors on the mound as they battled to keep the game close. BGA was just too much for the Tigers on the defensive side to put together enough hits in the same inning to keep the game close.
The game ended in seven innings and the Tigers dropped out of the playoffs in the loss. Congratulations to our 2017 team and seniors on a great season.
Softball Season Ends in District Tournament
The resurgence of the softball program came to USN this year behind the leadership of seniors Puja Jagasia and Elsa Wilson. The Tigers faced a tough challenge in the district tournament on the road at Battle Ground Academy. The Tigers could not get out of the first inning before the Wildcats had jumped all over USN. The Tigers took the loss in three innings and ended their season.
Puja Jagasia was named to the All-District team for her efforts this spring. Congratulations to Puja and the entire 2017 softball team.
Boys' Lacrosse Defeats JPII on Senior Night
The boys' lacrosse team celebrated three seniors on Friday against Pope John Paul II in their final regular season home game. The Tigers jumped out to an early lead in the game and held off a late rally to put a nice cap on the regular season.
USN scored early on some strong offensive sets that opened up the Knights' defense and gave the Tigers some early scoring opportunities. The Tigers capitalized and held a 4-2 lead at halftime. Some crafty ball movement in the third period led to five unanswered goals before JPII could stop the momentum, with USN at a 9-4 advantage heading into the fourth period.
The Tigers spent that quarter trying not to lose the game and it would go down to the wire with the Knights climbing all the way back to make it a one-goal game. A last second shot just missed the target, and the Tigers escaped the game with the 9-8 victory.
They await the release of the playoff schedule but will be playing this weekend in a first round game.
