Actors prepare for “Comic Potential”

As we head into Spring Break, Student Theatre Guild actors and Technical Theatre classes have been hard at work pulling together Alan Ayckbourn’s “Comic Potential.” The show opens four days after we return to school.
Actors have been rehearsing, learning the lines, developing their characters and figuring out comic timing. Technicians have been building moveable platforms, hanging lights, and finding set pieces.
The great thing about the STG production is the opportunity for students to work collaboratively on a large project. A theatrical show is a complicated venture, a multifaceted concern, an intricate machine with many moving parts; there are many elements which have to coalesce into one unified whole. Acting, set, lighting, sound, costumes, properties, flyers, and programs all involve many individuals who have to come together in one mindset for the greater good. What is delightful about the process is the joy the students have in creating this together.
“Comic Potential” is a comedy about employing robots as actors in a television production, what works, what doesn’t, and who’s really in control.
On Monday, March 27, the show will move right into technical rehearsals for three days. Lighting and sound cues will be incorporated, costumes will be added, and the technical running crew comes on board. Everyone understands the real deadline in theater: opening night.
We hope you will join STG for “Comic Potential.” Performances are 5 p.m. Thursday, March 30, 7 p.m. Friday, March 31, and 7 p.m. Saturday, April 1. Admission is by donation, and students will give all proceeds to a charitable organization.
