The Wooten Brothers bring magic to Music Night

by Abbie Sanders, Music Night co-chair

Music Night 2017 raised more than $18,000 to finish paying for the new River Campus bleachers installed last summer.
"It matters not what country the musician or the fan comes from. Music is a language that all understand. It goes beyond and breaks down barriers."
-Victor L. Wooten, author, musician, Music Night legend, and USN Dad

Aren't these words not only true of music but also of our USN community? It sure felt like it this past President's Day weekend as we broke a little bread, danced, and caught up with friends on the front steps looking out at Edgehill Avenue, enjoying a balmy February night.

We knew what a treasure we were given before the day of the concert. Many folks have been longtime fans of The Wooten Brothers. New fans, in the spirit of curiosity and good study habits, listened to music from various devices in anticipation of the show. Yet I am not sure any of us knew that we would get to witness such powerful good magic that would rub off a little on all of us. I didn't make up the magic part, by the way; it is what I heard people saying all around that evening, laughing as makeup artists painted Mardis Gras masks on their faces, trading donated beads. I wonder who ended up taking home the turkey necklace?

At the end of the night, looking at full recycling bins, the music of four brothers and a son still echoing in the Auditorium, it was a little sad that it was time to take down the decorations and leave this moment.  Walking out past the USNA office, I thought about the work that was done. Music Night netted over $18,000. Those funds paid off all of the new bleachers at the River Campus. Last year, funds from Music Night paid for the first half of the bill. Led by world-class talent, supported by our faculty, staff, and friends, sponsored by generous individuals and businesses, we came together and made a difference.

Victor wrote, "You can only teach yourself. Until we live in a day where I can physically implant knowledge into your head, I can teach you nothing. I can only show you things."

Thanks for showing us, Wooten Family.
