Varsity boys’ basketball notches two more winsThe varsity boys’ basketball team picked up two more wins over the past week. Our boys notched wins over Davidson Academy on Friday, Jan. 20 for Homecoming and Saturday, Jan. 21 over Donelson Christian Academy.
Myles Hamilton led the Tigers with 22 points en route to a 64-43 victory over the visiting Bears. Andrew Thornton added 11 points, and George Corzine rounded out the Tigers by scoring in double figures.
The team had a short turnaround Saturday, Jan. 21 with an early game prior to the Homecoming Dance. The team was sluggish to start and didn't completely wake up until the fourth quarter. The Tigers trailed by four points headed into the fourth quarter but outscored the Wildcats 19-9 in the final quarter to secure their eighth straight victory 59-53. Connor Shockley led the Tigers with 15 points. Drew Dibble and Andrew Thornton each scored 11 to help pace the team.
Junior varsity boys’ basketball picks up two wins
The junior varsity boys' basketball team picked up two recent wins over Davidson Academy and Donelson Christian Academy. The team jumped out to a big lead behind the heavy pressure on defense from the Christie-Mizell brothers, Truman and William, which led to easy baskets in transition for the team. Meanwhile, the Kleiner brothers, Max and Jack, ate up space in the paint and came down with rebounds on both ends to keep the Bears off the backboard and scoreboard. Graham Elliot and Quinn Wheelock provided additional scoring and defensive rebounding, and the Tigers pulled out the win.
The boys continued to show the program is in good hands with another victory Saturday, Jan. 21 at Donelson Christian Academy. The boys continued to play high-pressure defense causing several turnovers and creating easy opportunities for points at the other end. They held on for their second straight victory with a 51-40 win.
Girls’ basketball knocks off DCA on the road
The Tigers had a hard time scoring the ball on Friday, Jan. 20 against Davidson Academy due to the tough deny defense employed by the Bears. Elsa Wilson has been hot lately in games, but the Tigers could not get her open for shots all night. Amara Payne led the Tigers with 11 points in the game, but turnovers and easy baskets for Davidson created a deficit too big for the team to overcome. The final score was Davidson 44 - USN 23.
The girls' basketball team picked up a road win over Donelson Christian Academy on Saturday, Jan. 21. The Tigers had a short turnaround after the Homecoming Game loss against Davidson Academy but started the afternoon game strong. Amara Payne proved she would be tough to stop all night early in the game. However, Payne would leave the game due to a cut under her eye with 14 points and the Tigers finished the game without her. Mary Sophia Reich and Olivia Dossett picked up their output on offense and finished the game with 10 and 8 points, respectively. The Tigers pulled out the 45-37 victory to pick up their fifth win of the season.
Boys’ swimming sweeps district, combined team finishes runner-up
The swimming team celebrated Senior Night on Wednesday, Jan. 18 at their home away from our USN pool, the Vanderbilt Recreation and Wellness Center. The team practices there three afternoons each week and was ready to perform after the high notes from last week's Sewanee Snowball victory. New region and state cuts were made by a select group and our two seniors, Puja Jagasia and Trudy Zou, were celebrated in their final regular season meet.
Highlights of the meet included Jordan Billups (50 free), Ashleigh Grindon (100 breast), and Francesca Kusserow (100 breast) earning their way onto the Region team. On the boys’ side, Ittai Eden picked up the 100 free cut, and Henry Standard picked up the 100 fly region cut. The girls' 200 medley relay posted one of the fastest dual meet times in school history with the help of Izzy Lutes' relay split (26.20), which now ranks on USN all-time top 10 list. Trudy Zou (200 IM, 100 breast) and Josh Twillie (200 IM, 100 fly) also earned new spots on the USN all-time top 10 list, along with Trudy's 200 free relay anchor (25.52). Trudy's individual medley was a 2.5-second drop off her previous best.
Team results included both teams sweeping the competition provided by Central Magnet School and Christ Presbyterian Academy, resulting in our combined and girls’ teams finishing second behind Centennial High School in the division, and the boys winning the division championship.
