High School students brought their top performances to the Bishop Guild Debates in Alabama.
USN debaters turned in an impressive team performance, which included a championship in the first-year division last weekend at the Bishop Guild Debates at Samford University in Birmingham, Ala.
Two varsity teams finished with 4-2 records in the preliminary competition to reach the 16th round. Hannah Wolfson '17 and Akash Kurupassery '18 won their octo-final round on a 2-1 decision over Calhoun, Ga. They then dropped their quarterfinal round to the top overall seed from Montgomery Bell Academy. William Bradshaw '18 and Evan Rork '19 also reached elimination rounds before dropping their sweet 16 matchup to Woodward Academy in Georgia. Wolfson was the fifth-place speaker and Bradshaw was 16th out of 86 competitors in the field.
Arushi and Neha Mehta '20 won six consecutive debates to finish champions in the novice policy division. After finishing prelims with a 4-2 record, they beat MBA on a 3-0 decision in the quarterfinal round. They then won a 2-1 decision over Chattahoochee, Ga. in the semifinals and scored a unanimous final round victory over Johns Creek, Ga. Nick Clancy '20 and Wei Dai '20 won four consecutive debates to reach the quarterfinal round where they lost to the division's top seed from Alpharetta, Ga.
All six novices finished with speaker awards: Neha finished third, Arushi finished fifth, Olivia Rhee '20 finished sixth, Ariel Hong '20 finished 11th, Clancy finished 12th, and Wei finished 19th in the first-year division.
The team is now hard at work preparing for its next debates at Emory University at the end of January.
