USN will be competing against some new opponents starting in the 2017-18 school year. Christ Presbyterian Academy, Goodpasture Christian School, and Nashville Christian School are the first teams who have announced that they will be joining the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association Division II Class A, the division in which USN competes.

The two classes for Division II are determined by the enrollment of the school. Presently, in order to be a part of Division II Class A, schools may have enrollments up to 450 students.  Schools with enrollments of 451 students or more will be classified into Division II Class AA.

The Goodpasture Cougars, who have won 26 Division I state titles in all sports since 1988, including winning the state volleyball tournaments the last four years, are moving from District 8-A and into Division II Class A.

The CPA Lions, who have won 10 team state titles in all sports in the last four years, are moving from Division I Class AA. They are changing divisions because of the new TSSAA changes regarding financial aid. CPA, a school that gives financial aid, had been competing against public schools who do not give financial aid. The TSSAA presented CPA with an ultimatum to either move up to Division II with other schools that provide financial aid or to stop providing financial aid and stay in Division I. CPA decided to move into Division II Class A.

Sophomore George Corzine is enthusiastic about the new opportunity to play against teams that USN did not have the opportunity to play before the reclassification. Both Corzine and Will Greenfield ‘19 are both confident in the basketball team’s chances in the division in the coming years.

“I think that the changes in the division are going to lead to some good games in the future,” said Greenfield.

Corzine agrees.

“The teams who are going to move into our division want a challenge, and they are going to get one,” said Corzine.

Mike Gimblette, the new head high school baseball coach, is excited to see how the TSSAA divides up the divisions, and see what new teams his team will play in the coming years.

“I can’t wait until they announce the division changes so we can see who we will play in the future. We will start scouting our new opponents as soon as the TSSAA decides to announce the changes,” said Gimblette.

The TSSAA has said that they will be dividing the two divisions based on enrollment, and the enrollment ranges for each division may change every three years. For 2017-18, Class A will consist of private schools whose enrollment is under 500 students or less. Class AA will be made up of private schools whose enrollment is 501 students or more.

Freshman Graham Elliot is undecided on how he feels about the new changes and how the divisions are divided.

“I don’t know how they are going to divide the divisions, but I hope it is favorable to the USN sports teams,” said Elliot.

With this new method of dividing the two private school divisions in place, Class A will add Goodpasture, CPA, Nashville Christian. Schools such as Ensworth and Brentwood Academy remain undecided on which division they will be in, due to borderline enrollment numbers. (Brentwood Academy: 497 and Ensworth: 463). There are some schools that may move up from Class A to Class AA depending on their high school enrollment.
