The USN HS swimming girls competed against St. Cecilia on Wednesday in a dual meet at Vanderbilt’s Recreation & Wellness Center. The girls-only format led to a quick meet with some spirited races and strong early-season performances.
In the team scores, USN’s girls won 109-56, exceeding our expectations. The meet's racing reflected a much closer competition in many ways, however.
The meet began with the 200 medley relay. Given how quick the meet looked to be, we swam only an “A” relay, electing to save some girls’ swims for their individual races later on. Margaret Luffman, Trudy Zou, Abby Liff, and Izzy Lutes won by a little over a second, with freshmen Abby and Izzy contributing particularly good splits.
Next, Mia Pretorius and Jessica Mei kicked off the individual events with a 1-2 finish in the 200 free. Annie French finished second in a season-best time in the 200 IM, and Trudy Zou and Izzy Lutes followed up with a 1-2 finish in the 50 freestyle. Notably, Trudy bettered the state qualifying time and earned a spot on the USN all-time Top 10 with her swim.
After the break, Margaret Luffman won the 100 butterfly,;Trudy and Abby Liff finished 1-2 in the 100 freestyle. Katie Watke and Jessica Mei took on the role of racing the 500 freestyle and finished 1-2. Jessica was swimming her first 500; Katie has swum several this season, but tonight’s swim was a lifetime best by seven seconds.
The girls’ 200 freestyle relay – Abby, Annie, Izzy, and Trudy – took first place in our season-best time, and Margaret and Annie closed the individual races with wins in the 100 backstroke and 100 breaststroke, respectively. Annie’s swim was her in-season best and within striking distance of the state cut.
The final event of the night was the 400 freestyle relay, and our girls’ depth showed in a big way: our “B” relay was unexpectedly challenging our “A” relay for the first half of the race, en route to a 1-2 finish.
Outside of our event winners, we saw some excellent swims by our new swimmers, particularly in the freshman class. Tatiana Barbic earned her first Region cut in the 100 free
Jordan Billups continues to swim best times at every meet and is now very close to the Region cut in the 50 free. Kylie Cook had a fantastic 100 breaststroke swim, winning her heat by five seconds.
The team’s next meet is in January; for now, we’ll go into training mode with an eye towards the Region and State meets after the break. Special appreciation is in order for our boys’ team timers and all our parent volunteers! Thank you for making this meet a smooth and successful one.
