The USN HS swimming team hosted Cookeville High School in an unscored dual meet prior to Thanksgiving in our only true home meet of the year.
On the girls’ side, individual winners included Margaret Luffman, Isabella Lutes, Trudy Zou, and Mia Pretorius. Margaret, Trudy, and Mia won two events each, while Izzy captured her one individual race of the day, the 40 freestyle. Our boys’ individual winners were Ian Brash, Josh Twillie, and Curtis Patey, all of whom won two events each.
Another highlight of this meet was the chance to split our relays to have some exciting intrasquad racing, which is a good indication of our depth as a team. In the girls’ 160 medley relay, the team of Margaret Luffman, Annie French, Abby Liff, and Izzy Lutes edged the team of Katie Watke, Trudy Zou, Mia Pretorius, and Betsy Nolan by just .38 seconds. In the boys’ relay, Clayon Jelsma, Elliott Clark, Henry Standard, and Curtis Patey edged Pelham Bergesen, Ian Brash, Josh Twillie, and Ittai Eden by just .24 seconds.
Swimmers of the meet were Mia Pretorius, who won both her individual events and showed some good range in extending her repertoire to the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly, and Elliott Clark, who posted two strong in-season performances in the 100 breaststroke and 100 freestyle.
The USN girls’ team will return to competition on November 30 against St. Cecilia, while the boys’ team resumes competition in January.
