National Alumni Board of Visitors brings Tigers back to campus
by Anna Myint '04, alumni director & social media manager
Alumni spanning six decades returned to PDS/USN for a board meeting.
Eighteen alumni from the classes of 1956 through 2010 returned to USN from across the country for the National Alumni Board of Visitors meeting Nov. 6-7. This gathering was the strongest attended NABV meeting since it began seven years ago. They traveled from as far away as Seattle, Wash. and Boston, Mass. to visit their alma mater and learn what is happening on Edgehill Avenue.
We started our meeting by gathering to watch the High School musical, “Urinetown.” Afterwards, River Campus Director Bret Mash met the group to tour and discuss the development of our River Campus, wetlands, and athletic fields. A majority of the alumni have never been to the River Campus and enjoyed walking around at sunset while seeing students practicing lacrosse, soccer, and track. We finished our first day with dinner at alumni Ben ’98 and Max ’01 Goldberg’s restaurant, Le Sel,with company from the local Alumni Board and Board of Trustees.
NABV returned to campus the following day for a full agenda. Director Vince Durnan began the morning by discussing the Strategic Planning Committee’s educational safari. We then got an update on One School. Our Future. A Campaign for University School of Nashvillefrom Director of Development Anne Westfall and Campaign Co-Chair Teri Doochin Kasselberg '73. The group toured the main campus and had lunch with members of the Class of 2017, who chatted about their daily lives and extracurricular activities at USN. We finished our day with discussions on benchmarking data comparative to schools across the country as well as on financial aid with Chief Financial Officer Teresa Standard, Director of Admissions and Financial Aid Juliet Douglas, and Director of Financial Services Kyron Buckner.
The purpose of this group is to help keep alumni spread across the United States engaged with the school. Representatives in each city will get in touch with alumni living near them soon to share what they observed during the two-day meeting. Questions and open discussions were plentiful, and energy was vibrant. It was great having our alumni back on campus to speak about a place they know and love dearly.
As part of a longstanding tradition, retired teachers and professionals from USN over the years came together to celebrate, connect, and reminisce during their annual luncheon in Durnan Auditorium.
It is common to have five or more University School of Nashville student-athletes sign college athletic commitment letters each year, and this year, USN saw eight more student-athletes commit to continue their athletic careers at the collegiate level. USN has several alumni participating in their chosen sport at the collegiate level from the Classes of 2021 through 2025.
