HS Swimming Tigers split with Centennial, Hume-Fogg

Zou, Luffman, Twillie, Patey earn State qualifying times; Watke and Jelsma are swimmers of the meet
The USN HS swim team traveled to Brentwood last Tuesday to compete against Centennial HS and Hume-Fogg in a spirited double dual meet with lots of close races all afternoon.

The boys’ team emerged with narrow wins over both Centennial (81-67) and Hume-Fogg (77-59).  Our girls’ team defeated Hume-Fogg (98-60) but fell to Centennial (104-62).  This gave the combined team a split, winning over Hume-Fogg (175-119) but losing to Centennial (171-143).

The boys were led by junior Joshua Twillie, who won both the 50 and 100 freestyles, showing some good early season speed in both races.  Josh’s 50 freestyle time was under the state qualifying time.  Fellow junior Curtis Patey finished second in both the 50 and 100 as well, punching his ticket to the state meet in the 50 freestyle in the process.  Josh and Curtis also contributed to the winning 200 freestyle relay, along with their classmate Henry Standard and freshman Ian Brash.

Additionally, Josh’s 50 butterfly split (25.25) on the second-place 200 medley relay was good enough for a spot on the USN all-time Top 10 list.

Ian added the other individual win for the boys’ team, dropping over three seconds to take the 100 breaststroke.  His time is less than a second away from the state qualifying time.

The girls’ meet was bigger, and probably more competitive across the board, than the boys’ meet.  Senior Trudy Zou led the way with the only individual win of the day, capturing the 100 breaststroke.  Her 100 breast time was under the state qualifying time, and she earned another state qualifying time in the 200 IM as well, where she finished third.

Junior Margaret Luffman had a strong 100 butterfly race, finishing second in one of her best in-season times ever, where she was well under the state qualifying time.  Margaret also earned a new spot on the USN all-time top 10 list in her 50 butterfly split on the 200 medley relay.  Margaret also finished second in the 100 backstroke.

Freshman Abby Liff finished second and third in the 50 and 100 freestyles, respectively, and was within striking distance of the state qualifying time in both races.

Overall, we were pleased at the team’s ability to perform in a range of events, and encouraged by the significant improvement over last week’s meet.  Newcomers Jade Hardaway, Jordan Billups and Manuel Guevara were visibly stronger than they were even just a few days ago, which is a testament to their consistent effort and focus in training.

Our swimmers of the meet were junior Katie Watke, who earned a lifetime best in the 500 freestyle by over seven seconds, and Clayton Jelsma, who dropped a second in the 50 freestyle and over 5 seconds in the 100 backstroke.

The Tigers return to competition on Wednesday, November 16, when Cookeville High School comes to swim at our historic USN pool.  Tig
