Swimming Tigers open season with wins over H-F and MLK

The USN HS Swimming Tigers opened the season on Tuesday with a double dual meet against Hume-Fogg and MLK Magnet schools.  With a few of our swimmers still in fall sports playoff mode, and a few still preparing for the HS Musical, we didn’t know quite what to expect from our somewhat limited squad.

The combined girls/boys team emerged with wins over both MLK (177-89) and Hume-Fogg (160-124) in a meet that featured lots of close races and some great early season energy.  We were excited to see our swimmers cheering for each other behind the lanes and staying emotionally engaged throughout the entire meet, in a 25-meter pool environment where times don't mean a whole lot right now.

Our girls’ team earned wins over both MLK (95-63) and Hume-Fogg (105-38).  Senior Trudy Zou, sophomore Margaret Luffman, and freshman Abby Liff won two events each to lead the way for the girls.  Trudy captured the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke, earning state qualifying times in both events.  Margaret won the 100 butterfly and backstroke.  Abby won the 50 and 100 freestyles, leading a 1-2-3 finish for USN in the 50, with her classmate Isabella “Izzy” Lutes and sophomore Mia Pretorius not far behind.  Mia also finished second in the 100 free.

All three girls’ relays won their events as well. Sophomore Annie French added two strong freestyle relay splits, Katie Watke led off the 200 medley relay, and Trudy, Margaret, Abby, Izzy, and Mia all played important roles on winning relays as well.

Other strong swims came from freshmen Jordan Billups and Jade Hardaway, who have shown significant improvement in a matter of a few weeks.  Jade’s 200 freestyle represented a nine-second improvement over her previous best.

On the boys’ side, USN narrowly won over MLK (72-51) and Hume-Fogg (65-61), despite winning only two individual events and zero relays.  Josh Twillie captured the 50 freestyle in a state qualifying time, and freshman Ian Brash won the 100 breaststroke in a race that was too close to see.

The boys’ 200 freestyle relay – Ian, Curtis Patey, Henry Standard, and Josh – was narrowly out-touched by MLK, and Curtis’ split (25.7) was particularly promising.

Other noteworthy performances came from sophomore Clayton Jelsma, who earned his first Region cut in his first HS meet, and sophomore Elliott Clark, whose breaststroke showed some very nice early season speed.

The Tigers return to competition next Tuesday, November 1, in a double dual meet against Centennial HS and Hume-Fogg (again).
