Middle School Athletics Corner

by Lilly Miller, seventh and eighth grade athletic coordinator

A recap of Middle School golf, volleyball, tennis, cross country, and football games.
Golf
Seventh graders Will Barrett and Russ Petty qualified for the Harpeth Valley Athletic Conference at Ted Rhodes on Monday, Sept. 26. Both golfers shot the ball well, combining for a score of 89 on the day. Barrett finished in the top 10 of all golfers. Anne Griffin, our only girl to qualify for the HVAC tournament, played at Cheekwood Golf Course on Wednesday, Sept. 28. She finished the round with a score of 41, which was enough to earn her a tie for third place.

Volleyball
The Tigers closed out the regular season last week with a win over Harding Academy and a close loss to Franklin Road Academy. Maggie Goodson and Olivia Gerregano dominated offensively and Lucy King and Erica Friedman provided the footwork and defensive skills to keep the games competitive.

After grabbing the No. 12 seed in the Harpeth Valley Athletic Conference tournament, the volleyball team was eliminated in the first round. The Tigers played a tight match with Lipscomb Academy but lost both games 25-21 and 26-24.

Tennis
The girls' team attempted to get in final tournament play on Monday, Sept. 26 but the game was rained out. The tournament continued at the USN River Campus courts on Wednesday, Sept. 28 with Neha Saggi, Emma Devlin, Ria Patel, Harper Johnston, Sarah Jacobs, Halle Greenbaum, and Jadyn Sheats competing for an HVAC title. Our singles lines were unable to grab wins, but both sets of doubles won their first round matches.  Congratulations to Johnston and Jacobs at line one doubles and Greenbaum and Sheats at line two doubles.

The boys' team traveled to Montgomery Bell Academy on Tuesday, Sept. 27 for its final tournament and finished fifth overall. Stefan Pretorius, Kabir Bagai, Kunaal Saggi, Marcus Fontenot, Jonathan Lippolis, Julius Fox, and Henry Stack competed. Pretorius grabbed an individual win at the No. 1 position for the team. Stack and Fox were mighty and strong on the doubles court getting a tie-breaking win over Ensworth. What a great finish for our Tiger tennis players.

Cross Country
The harriers are in taper mode as they prepare for the HVAC championship meet Friday, Sept. 30 at the River Campus. Both the boys and girls' teams are expected to finish well amongst the strong competition. The girls' race begins at 4:15 p.m. with the boys' race to follow at 4:45 p.m.

Football
The seventh and eighth-grade football team with Harding Academy won big on Spirit Week. The Generals hosted Christ the King. Tillman Payne and Jordan Turner each represented USN well in the 35-0 win, improving the team's record to 5-0 with the final game today, Sept. 29 at Mt. Juliet Christian at 6 p.m.

The sixth-grade football team with Harding Academy lost a tough matchup 22-7 with Brentwood Academy over the weekend. The boys dropped their overall record on the season to 3-3 and will play Saturday, Oct. 1 at Lipscomb at 9:45 a.m. USN players include Khalil Anderson, Brock Burgess, Noah Kim, Caleb Spears, and Hudson Weinberg.
