High School Theatre begins 'Urinetown' production

by Catherine Coke, High School theater teacher

"Urinetown: The Musical" will run Wednesday, Nov. 2 through Sunday, Nov. 6.
Though the new one-act "PlayFest 2016" closed last weekend, High School Theatre is on the move. On Monday, Sept. 19 and Tuesday, Sept. 20, we held auditions and callbacks for this fall's musical, and we had our first read-through with the cast on Wednesday, Sept. 21.

The musical for this fall is "Urinetown: The Musical" with book and lyrics by Greg Kotis and music and lyrics by Mark Hollmann. Premiering in 2000, this non-mainstream musical appeared at the New York International Fringe Festival and then moved off-Broadway. In a major leap of faith, with stars aligning, it opened on Broadway in September 2001. Garnering nine nominations for Tony Awards, "Urinetown" won Best Book, Best Score, and Best Direction in 2002.

Our cast includes students from the Class of 2017: Bonnie Allen, Alex Bahner, Camilla Caldwell, Patrick Chickey, Gal Crouvi, Kate Deegan, Hanan Fakhruddin, Isaiah Frank, Josh Gabella, Amelia Hahn, Henry Hicks IV, Leah Hicks, Eleanor Koch, Alice May, Allie Roche, Camille Townson, and Braelyn Watt; from the Class of 2018: Jaxon Cannon, Foster Cook, Max Komisar, Zoe Lewis, Ben Maloy, Evan Mukherji, Mary Niarhos, Kaitlyn Nicholls, Callie Sands, Denee Stewart Freeman, Haley Harris, Evelyn TeSelle, and Isa Wierum; from the Class of 2019: Elijah Beyer, Moniaka Bonds, Haley Covington, Jolie Diskin, Olivia Dossett, Jane Goodwin, Carter Koch, Sarah Manz, Avery Sweet, and Claire Yezbak; from the Class of 2020: Becca Ashworth, Sylvie Babat, Claudia Bennett, Madeline Bennett, Nicholas Clancy, Kylie Cook, Zoey Fink, Will Growdon, Sam Horner, Nicholas Key, Claire Kim, Madeline Langlinais, Morgan Lewis, Alex McDonald, Gideon Mosse, Olivia Rhee, Hannah West, Ashton Wise, and Lillian Worley.

Performances are: 5 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 2 and Thursday, Nov.  3; 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 4 and Saturday, Nov. 5; and 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 6. Tickets are free for students, faculty, staff, and Tiger Arts Patron members. They are $5 for the general public. Advanced purchase and reservations will be available online after fall break and encouraged because seating is limited.
