Seniors in Vince Durnan's Contemporary Civics class heard the mission of the MDHA explained by its executive director Jim Harbison, who visited earlier this week.
His visit was a way to help the students understand one of the primary issues facing Nashville as it grows: affordable housing. Harbison explained that the average monthly rent for a one bedroom apartment in the city is now $1,066. Since the vouchers issued by the MDHA are for $758, it is getting harder every day to find landlords who will accept a voucher.
Harbison explained the MDHA's plans for providing new homes for those in public housing without disrupting their community networks. The MDHA's mission is "to create affordable housing opportunities, support neighborhoods, strengthen communities and help build a greater Nashville."
"Envision Cayce," now underway, is the first of several projects to create mixed-income developments where pockets of poverty now exist. Current residents of the Cayce Homes will live in new housing, joined by qualifying people paying 80% of the market rate and those who can afford to pay the market rate. The proof of success, he told the students, will be when they come back from college and choose to live in such places.
