AMC Contest Challenges Top HS Math Students

by Cindy Crenshaw, head of the math department

Last month all 140 high school advanced math students participated in the American Mathematics Competition.
The AMC 10 is part of the series of contests administered by the MAA American Mathematics Competitions that determines the United States team in the International Math Olympiad. The non-calculator contest requires problem-solving ability, creativity, and strong conceptual skills along with persistence.

Congratulations to our top three scorers for the AMC 10 event this year: Hannah Laibinis, Annie French and Alex Lomis. The top three scorers for the AMC 12 contest are Barbara Xiong, Michael Becker and Jay Karp.

Questions on these contests increase in difficulty throughout the test. The following question is #4 from this year’s AMC 10 (the 75 minute contest for students in grades 9-10).

"Zoey read books one at a time. The first book took her 1 day to read, the second book took her 2 days to read, the third book took her 3 days to read, and so on, with each book taking her 1 more day to read than the previous book. Zoey finished the first book on a Monday and the second on a Wednesday. On what day of the week did she finish her 15th book?"
