Lower School students joined the high school Community Service Club in providing a special Valentine’s celebration to the seniors at Gernert Studio Apartments down the street on Edgehill.
The residents were excited to win the gift bags that Lower School children had made and decorated.  Lower school students provided so many toiletries that we delivered boxes to another one of our Edgehill partner organizations as well, Wedgewood Towers, a senior residential facility.

Hanan Fakhruddin ‘17, chair of the event, commented, “It was lovely getting to interact with the seniors and bringing a smile to them on such a rainy day."

"It was fun making the roses in Community Service Club meeting.”

One of the residents remarked that she especially enjoyed the classical piano music from Mathis Leblanc ’17 while eating brownies made by another club member.   “It put me in a dream state as if no one else was around,” one of the ladies said.

As part of our Valentine's Day celebration we decorated bags and filled them with the toiletries to be used as prizes for the Bingo game,” said second grade teacher Melissa Sherman, Lower School organizer, who was assisted in this venture by several of her colleagues.

"We love doing stuff for other people, so we thought if we did a lot of chores we could raise a lot of money." Hannah and Patricia Frohsin picked up sticks, cleaned out cubbies, and helped their mom organize kitchen supplies and balls in the garage.

Residents departed the celebration with colorfully decorated gift bags, Hershey's Kiss rosebuds, and huge smiles on their faces.

First grade teacher Betsy Hoffman was pleased with the way this service project fit smoothly into the curriculum. “We have been studying collections, why they are important, and how to evaluate items in a collection by developing criteria, so we used the toiletry collection as one of our learning tools. This became a social action unit as well as simply a collection unit.  It was fun seeing the students become so excited about helping others.”

Gernert Studio Apartments became one of our Edgehill partner organizations about two years ago when some of its residents began to teach and encourage us in the Edgehill Community Garden.   Soon we’ll be planting seeds and growing seedlings so that we can continue to learn from these older adults.  Our Valentine’s party was just one way of thanking them for their advice and friendship.
