Tigers Shine at Region Championship

Justin Karpinos
The USN swim team brought 20 qualifiers to the MTHSSA Region meet last Friday at Centennial Sportsplex and emerged from this meet with some great performances.

30 of our 35 season bests or lifetime best swims.  All of our 9 relays swam season best times, and 30 of the 36 individual relays splits were season best swims.

The girls were led by junior Trudy Zou, who swam two lifetime best swims to place in the top 16 in both her individual events.  Her times in the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke both earned spots on the USN all-time Top 10 list.

Senior Natalie TeSelle added a lifetime best swim in the 100 butterfly, which placed her in the top 16 as well.

Freshman Annie French and senior Ky Hall, swimming side by side in the 100 breaststroke, both qualified for the state meet.  Annie’s time was a four second drop, and Ky’s time was a two second drop.  Annie also had two great relay splits, earning a spot on the top-10 list for one of the fastest 50 breaststroke relay performances in in school history.

On the boys’ side, Josh Twillie and Jack Reed posted the highest individual finishes of the day.  Josh finished 10th in the 50 freestyle with a time of 22.87, and Jack’s lifetime best swim of 22.90 earned him 12th.  Both of them joined with seniors Ben Werther and Mitchell Coverstone to place seventh in the 200 freestyle relay, our only top-8 relay finish of the day.  Their time of 1:35.21 earned 9th on the all-time top 10 list.

Major time drops were recorded by everyone on the Region team; this was a true team effort. We were particularly excited by:

-Graham Shockley, who dropped 15 seconds in his 500 freestyle along with 4 seconds in his 200 freestyle

-Jay Karp, who led off the “B” 400 freestyle with a personal best time by 8 seconds

-Elliott Clark, who dropped another two seconds in both his 100 breaststroke and 100 freestyle

-Our corps of 50 and 100 freestylers, who swam 100% season bests.   We challenged them to step up last week and lead the team with their performances, and Mia, Ky, Annie, Betsy Nolan, Jessica Mei, Josh, Jack, Mitchell, Ben, Jay, Foster Cook all looked great, winning their heats left and right.

The only bittersweet moment all day was that this meet marked the final high school races for two seniors, Caroline Hollahan and Kevin Chen.  Caroline and Kevin have both been 4-year Region qualifiers and valuable members in a range of events.   Caroline closed out her high school career with her lifetime bests in the 50 and 100 butterfly, and season bests in the 200 freestyle and on the 200 freestyle relay.  Kevin has swum everything from the 50 freestyle to the 200 IM and 500 free, and he has been our ‘A’ relay backstroker all year.

Moving forward, 12 of our swimmers will continue on to the TISCA State championship on February 12-13, which is also here in Nashville at Centennial Sportsplex.
