Donate Art Supplies for the Lakota

by 7th and 8th Grade Community Service Club Members

After learning about the culture and history of the Lakota, we decided to host an art drive from now until winter break.
Read about how we got interested in the Lakota and what we learned.

We asked Ms. Mann about some of the needed art supplies, and they asked us to collect gimp, pony beads, poster board, clay/play dough, sharpies, embroidery floss, and disposable cameras. We announced at town meeting that the drive will occur from December 2-18. We’re looking forward to the progression of donations and feel confident that the drive will be a success.

Bring your art supplies to the middle school office.

We chose to do an art supply drive because Carol Mann, the Director of the Sioux YMCA, told us that art is very important to the Lakota people, and they don’t have very many resources for their children to make art.

Instead of doing a pen pal kind of exchange, we are hoping to do an art exchange. This is because things that are written down on paper usually symbolize something bad to the Native Americans, and they would probably want to have actually met us before they start writing us letters. So, we decided to exchange art. That way it’s more fun to do and is something the children on the reservation will enjoy as well.
