Assistant Director Joins DCL Office

by Treda Collier, director of diversity and community life

We welcome a new Assistant Director of Diversity and Community Life, Roderick White.
His responsibilities at USN will include overseeing lower school student diversity initiatives, observing Black History Month and MLK Day, and working with students on ALBANIE  programming.

Here is what Roderick White has to say about assuming this role at USN:

"I am very excited to join the USN community as the Assistant Director of Diversity and Community Life. As USN enters its next 100 years, I realize the importance, now more than ever before, of focusing my attention on ensuring the best possible educational experiences are available, not just for my children, but for all.

"Toward that end, one of my main areas of concentration will be working with the Lower School to ensure that we know what embracing all of our differences really means. We should no longer just say, 'Welcome to USN' to new students, parents, and faculty/staff, but also say, 'We welcome your authentic self' into the USN community.

"I believe it is possible for USN to become more inclusive across all three divisions, and that all can experience the same kind of respect, opportunities, and success towards all of our pursuits. This inclusion does, however, require a commitment from all of us. In the words of Frederick Douglass, 'Without a struggle, there can be no progress.' I have an open door policy and am open to all who call."

Originally from Fayetteville, Tennessee, Roderick received his BA in Management and Human Relations after moving to Nashville and this past May received his JD degree from the Nashville School of Law. He has been a member of the Diversity Leadership Institute with the Tennessee Bar Association, working with attorneys from across the state addressing issues of diversity, culture, and race in the legal profession. Before that, Roderick worked in the healthcare field as part of several diversity and minority initiatives/committees.

In his spare time, Roderick enjoys playing music, football, and teaching gymnastics. He and his wife Tasha have three children, and his two girls, Gabrielle (5th) and Victoria (2nd), are students here at USN.

Please help me welcome Roderick and Robb King (ODCL Intern), the new additions to the ODCL Team, into the USN community.
