AD's Corner

by Josh Scouten, boys' athletic director

It's all soccer news this week, with the high school girls playing in a substate game Friday, October 23. Learn the exciting story of how they got there and more, including news of the middle school boys' and girls' teams.
HS Girls' Soccer takes top seed into region tournament, will travel for Substate
The girls' soccer team has experienced a great run through the regular season. They rolled through the district schedule and tournament, earning the top seed in the Region Tournament hosted at the River Campus this past week.

The girls won their first round game against The King's Academy 5-1 off two goals from senior forward Kara-Jade Gordon. Kaitlyn and Courtney Rabb each scored in the first half, and Olivia Dossett added a second half goal for the Tigers. The win forced a third match of the season with Battle Ground Academy, a team the Tigers had beat 3-0 one week earlier in the district semifinal game.

This game would not be as easy without top scorer Gordon, sidelined with an injury. USN dominated possession, but both teams struggled for quality opportunities to score. The game ended in a scoreless tie, and when four overtime periods did not result in a score for either team, penalty kicks were necessary to decide the outcome. USN scored two penalty kick opportunities from Savannah Groos and Olivia Dossett, but BGA connected on three kicks of the seven required to determine the winner.

The loss against BGA put USN into the consolation finals against Franklin Road Academy. The Tigers started the game on the defensive as FRA came out fast. Freshman goalie Maggie Robinson stood tall all night long to keep the Panthers' offense in check. FRA scored off a corner kick with 16 minutes remaining on a rebound shot from outside the 18-box. The game looked like it would end with that lone goal, but the Tigers drew a corner kick with two minutes left in the game. Karishma Patel placed the ball perfectly at the back post and Kaitlyn Rabb headed the ball towards the back of the net. FRA defended that shot, but Kaitlyn followed her shot with another that found the back of the net to tie the game with 1:53 remaining, forcing overtime. The Panthers scored in each of the two mandatory 10-minute overtime periods to seal the 3-1 win over USN.

The Tigers will now travel to the #1 seeded University School of Jackson on Friday for a Substate game at 4pm

MS Boys' Soccer opens season with wins over BGA and DCA
The middle school boys' soccer team has started the year strong. While they currently hold a 2-1 record, the team has dominated possession and opportunities in their three games.

The season started well for USN with a 2-0 win over BGA. Goals were scored by Landon Whitcomb and Dillon Patel. The Tigers traveled to Ensworth for their second game of the season, and while they dominated the possession game, Ensworth scored twice on breakaway goals to win the game 2-0.

The team rebounded coming out of Fall Break with a big win over DCA 6-2. Landon scored four times in this game, and Elias Woolsey and Henry Fitzgibbon scored their first goals of the season.

MS Girls' Soccer wins first games against Brentwood Academy and BGA
The middle school girls' soccer team notched two wins to start the season. The girls opened up the year with a 2-0 win over Brentwood Academy off goals from Gemma Jefferson on a header and Kailey Nichols on a free kick. Lia Payne and Lydia West made some nice saves in goal to start the season with a shutout.

The Tigers traveled to BGA for the second game of the year, and the midfield dominated play with quick, short touches on the ball that enabled USN to possess the ball throughout the game. Parker O'Hara, Dabney Moore, and Kailey Nichols all scored in the game to give USN a 3-0 victory over the Wildcats, with Lia Payne picking up another shutout in goal.
