LS Teachers Focus on Structured Word Inquiry

Last spring we told you how second graders used Structured Word Inquiry in the classroom.
This summer a group of lower school teachers attended a Structured Word Inquiry workshop at the Cathedral School in Washington, D.C. First grade teachers Debbie Roth and Liz Ammerman, second grade teacher Molly Darr, and first grade literacy specialist Trish Blackwell participated in this workshop.

Trish Blackwell, SWI veteran, found it helpful to attend the conference "with colleagues with whom I could discuss how this information for understanding word structure could be included within Word Study as we know it." It helped Trish "develop more insight into how to use word structure with young children."

The workshop was especially useful to Liz Ammerman, who is new to USN and new to SWI. She says that she learned "that it is never too early to begin talking about morphology and etymology with students, and that focusing solely on phonics or phonemic awareness when teaching spelling is confusing. I learned that even if I only do a few types of the activities the first year and add some each year, I will be guiding my young readers and spellers to a better understanding of the English language."

Such professional development opportunities as these for USN teachers are made possible by gifts to One School. Our Future. A Campaign for University School of Nashville.
