Teachers Join HS Faculty

by Steve Robins, head of the high school
Four teachers join the high school this year.  Steve Slovenski joins the science department to teach physics and engineering, replacing one of our most influential and creative teachers, the retiring Bill Rodriguez.  Steve is ready to carry on Bill’s tradition of innovation, having taught robotics and math courses before coming to Vanderbilt University to complete his M.Ed. in Learning and Instruction.  Steve received a B.S.E. in mechanical engineering from Princeton University.

Also joining the science department is Sharon Karackattu, who will teach freshman biology and sophomore chemistry. After undergraduate work at the University of Florida, Sharon moved on to MIT, where she earned a Ph.D. in Biology, then taught at Texas Women’s University and the University of North Texas before taking time off to begin raising her two young children. Sharon’s family is moving to Nashville from Pennsylvania.

Gaelle Emmery comes to us from Belgium via San Antonio, Texas.  The retirement this spring of Grace Melchiore, long a mainstay of our language program, created an opportunity to combine the teaching of both French and Spanish into a single position, for which Gaelle is ideally suited.  She is a native speaker of French who is also fluent in Spanish, Dutch, and English.  Gaelle will teach French II, Spanish III, and Spanish Conversation and Composition.

Kevin Liu, a graduate of Vanderbilt University with a B.S. in Secondary Education and Mathematics, rounds out our group of new teachers.  He will teach Algebra II and Precalculus.  Kevin arrives with experience teaching at the high school and middle school levels, along with a genuine passion for and understanding of both teaching and mathematics.
