HS Track sets more records at Div II-A Invitational Meet
Our intrepid young athletes celebrated the USN Centennial birthday with the Div II Class A mock State meet at FRA on a gorgeous day at a beautiful venue. This has always served as a fun meet in a low-key environment, and we were coming off a hard week of training.
GIRLS - Hannah Malkofsky-Berger continues her upward trajectory in the PV with a win and a PR of 11'0" and that's a new school record! Our sprint relays posted a win 4x100 50.66 and a runner-up 4x200 1:47.06 (Brooke Thompson, Savannah Groos, Joi Holmes, Kelly McHugh). Scoring team points in the open events: Talia Barton 3rd Pole Vault, Kelly McHugh 3rd 200m, Hannah M-B 4th and Lauryn Cravens 7th 400m, and Lydia Warren 6th 800m.
BOYS - we celebrated a number of event winners, also setting meet records: Kellon Patey 800m 2'01.68, and Dylan Groos 1600m 4'31.37. Chandler Floyd 6th 400m 53.56 and Harry Compton 2nd IF 44.12 posted great lifetime PR's. Our sprint relays posted strong runner up performances in the 4x1 45.36 (E Hong, G Faulcon, D Lutes, G Niarhos) and 4x2 1:44.99 (E Hong, G Faulcon, D Lutes, N Grizzell). Missing from the open races, but not forgotten, was senior Simpson Tanner anchoring the 4x4 relays with an astounding 48.9 split.
HS Baseball falls in District Final Four
The high school baseball team advanced to the district final four, finishing fourth. The team reached this mark and surpassed ten wins on the season just one year removed from a four win season.
The Tigers faced perennial powers FRA and BGA in the two final four games and could not keep pace. The team made some nice plays including a double play in the consolation finals, and Tevin Burdette had a home run ruled foul in the semifinal game that would have cut the lead to 6-4.
The team graduates the hard-hitting lone senior Matthew Woods, who made great strides this year, hitting his first home run and helping lead the young squad.
HS Girls' Lacrosse season ends in State Tournament
The girls' lacrosse team produced another successful season. They advanced to the State Tournament for the fourth consecutive year, entering as the 11-seed. The Tigers drew a rematch with Pope John Paul II. USN beat the Knights earlier in the season for the first time ever.
JPII came out strong in the first half and scored six goals before the Tigers could respond with a scoring opportunity. They would roll off another five goals before halftime to take a 11-1 lead at the break.
USN regrouped in the second half and made a great charge to cut the lead to 14-7. JPII responded to shut the door and advanced to the Elite Eight with the 15-8 victory.
HS Boys' Lacrosse season ends in State Tournament
The boys' lacrosse team opened playoffs with a rematch against Father Ryan in the first round. USN had the Irish on the ropes in the first game, but lost in overtime.
The Tigers opened the game with a goal from Jack Reed to take a 1-0 lead early in the game. The Irish scored the next three goals before Reed put in another goal to put USN down 3-2 at the end of the first quarter.
The next two quarters belonged to the Irish with three unanswered goals in the second quarter and three more to open the third quarter. The Tigers responded with two goals, but Father Ryan put in one more to lead 10-4 going into the final quarter.
The Tigers pressed hard but could not find the back of the net as Father Ryan scored three more goals in the fourth quarter. A late goal by Sam May made the final score 13-5 with Father Ryan advancing to the Quarterfinals.
HS Boys' Soccer season ends in District Finals
The boys' soccer team suffered a heartbreaking loss in the district consolation finals against Webb School.
The Tigers played to a 1-1 tie during the regular season and played another draw game in the finals, 0-0. The game remained tied, as the Tigers could not finish a penalty kick opportunity in the golden goal overtime periods.
The final tally came in penalty kicks where the Webb School Feet connected on four of their opportunities and the Tigers finished three opportunities for goals.
HS Tennis advances six to Individual State Tournament
The high school tennis teams participated in the region individual tennis tournament last weekend. The Tigers came away with six individuals advancing to the State Tournament.
Senior Francesca Eluhu will represent USN in the singles tournament as she advanced to the region finals match. Senior Elise Blackburn and 8th grader Mia Pretorius combined to advance in doubles play.
Senior Will Johnston advanced in singles play for the boys and fellow Senior Christian Hahnemann partnered with Sophomore Jackson Schnelle to advance in doubles competition.
Ella Cameron and Rebekah Doochin missed the cut in doubles, and Talia Stein missed in singles by one match, falling in the region quarterfinals.
Ultimate
The boys' and girls' ultimate teams competed in the State Tournament this past weekend in Murfreesboro.
The girls finished in first place again this season, defeating both Independence and Blackman on Saturday to bring home the title. The girls also received the tournament Spirit Award, given to the team with the best sportsmanship and overall team spirit.
The boys' team finished the tournament in 5th place. They went 3-1 in pool play but faced a tough Hardin Valley team in the first round of the playoffs on Sunday. The Tigers then defeated McCallie in the 5th place game 8-7 on universe point to pull out the 5th place finish.
The girls will travel to Southerns on Friday in Winston Salem, NC, while the boys will take a couple weeks to prepare for the Monkey Bowl tournament at the end of May.
