HS Student Committee is Finalist for Volunteer Award
The high school's Centennial Initiative Committee is a finalist for the Civic Volunteer Group Award, one of the Catherine Strobel Volunteer Awards.
This award, given by Hands On Nashville, "Recognizes representatives of civic, membership, faith-based or non-corporate groups that volunteer together for a specific cause or issue."
This committee has been working toward strengthening USN's ties with our Edgehill neighbors. It is led by Hannah Bollen '15, Kellon Patey '15, and Sydney Robbins '16.
Last fall the committee organized and led a panel discussion in our auditorium with community leaders Reverend Bill Barnes, founding pastor of Edgehill United Methodist Church; Nancy Crutcher, director of Edgehill Brighter Days program; King Hollands, chair of Organized Neighbors of Edgehill; and Betty Nixon, former Metro councilwoman and Assistant Vice-Chancellor for Community, Neighborhood and Government Relations at Vanderbilt University.
Centennial Initiative Committee sponsor Betty White is proud of the students. Here is her comment on their work:
I am so proud of the Centennial Initiative Committee (CIC) for not taking the easy or common road, but rather the more difficult and more important one of striving to build and strengthen relationships with our Edgehill neighbors. When this self-selected group began, I never dreamt that they would make so much progress so quickly, and they've only just begun. Last fall's Together on Edgehill community meeting was only the first in a series of gatherings they hope to have.
They have not only gained a plot in the Terrence Murray Edgehill Community garden, provided food to the local food bank at Kayne Avenue Church, served as weekly mentors at Edgehill Brighter Days' Program, and run a book drive for Salama children's program, but they have also engaged community leaders (Bill Barnes, Nancy Crutcher, King Hollands, Betty Nixon, Carolyn Anthony, Councilperson Moore) to give them advice and counsel. They are seeking to understand our total Edgehill community and USN's place in it. Through its interactions with classmates, the CIC has spread awareness of needs within our community, resulting in the junior class's financial donation, PEAs' donation of books and financial contribution, the band Riptide's designating W. O. Smith as the recipient of proceeds from its concert at the Basement, and a multitude of applications to Big Brothers/Big Sisters for next year.
As any member of the CIC will tell you, they realize that this initiative is not intended for the celebration of the Centennial alone. It is the launch of the next centennial. The hope is that when the students return in 5, 10 or 20 years, they will see even more interaction and stronger relationships with the Edgehill community. How rare it is to work with such insightful, forward-thinking and perceptive students. I feel honored to have the privilege of working with them.
It is common to have five or more University School of Nashville student-athletes sign college athletic commitment letters each year, and this year, USN saw eight more student-athletes commit to continue their athletic careers at the collegiate level. USN has several alumni participating in their chosen sport at the collegiate level from the Classes of 2021 through 2025.
