Climb USN

by Lilly Sagar, P. E. teacher

With the Centennial Year comes renewed energy and space.
Our newly constructed and professionally set climbing wall in the renovated Cheek Gym has been a highlight for our lower school students.  Beginning in the third grade, students have the opportunity to participate in a climbing unit in PE.  Each student gets a crash course in climbing; from putting on a harness to navigating difficult routes on the wall.

With multiple routes on the tall wall as well as our 50 foot traverse wall, there is an appropriate challenge for any climber.  One of the most popular is the "Rock Star" challenge.  The rules are simple, but the task is not.

In order to be crowned a "Rock Star," a climber must scale the entirety of the traverse wall without letting feet or hands come off of the wall.  Many have tried, few have survived.

Our High School students have a much different climbing experience. Each Wednesday at lunch time, a group of climbers heads to Climb Nashville, an indoor climbing gym on Charlotte Ave.  There the climbers can receive instruction from experienced climbers and educators.  All routes and activities in the gym are open to our students. They learn in-depth techniques, and vocabulary, and many especially enjoy the weekly push-up pyramid workouts!   From bouldering, to speed climbing, to swinging across the gym, our students are always engaged, challenged, and smiling.
