10 USN Students Receive Scholastic Writing Awards

by Freya Sachs, English Department Chair

This year, we had ten pieces of student writing recognized in the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards in the Southeast Region.*
Our USN students sent in an array of writing, from poems to short fiction, work done in our classrooms and beyond. Working with many of these students to revisit, edit and send their work in was a delight-- their poems and prose are full of images of cocoons, cattails, and eggs; of elbows; of the fox, the wind, and listening. Our award winners are listed below; I hope, too, that you'll have a chance to read award winning short stories by Alex Morgan '17 and Denee Stewart Freeman '18.

Silver Key, in Science Fiction / Fantasy-- Alex Morgan

Honorable Mentions, in Poetry-- Jessie Baskauf, Alice May, Denee Stewart Freeman, Carson Thomas

Honorable Mentions, in Short Story-- Shayna Beyer, Lena Friedman, Maya Riley, Denee Stewart Freeman (2)

*Alabama, Arkansas, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia as well as parts of Florida, Kentucky, Mississippi, and North Carolina.
