Swimming Tigers finish dual meets with a win

The USN swimming team traveled to Brentwood on Tuesday for our fourth meet in eleven days to take on Centennial High School and St. Cecilia in a double dual.  After three exciting and emotionally taxing meets in such a short span, we didn't know how the team would perform, and on paper we expected a very close meet.
 
Our girls defeated both St. Cecilia (89-78) and Centennial (93.5-67.5), while our boys fell to Centennial, 89-77, giving us the combined win over Centennial.
 
The boys' were led by some outstanding performances by our senior captains.  Kellon Patey won the 100 backstroke in his fastest in-season time, and Neil Zheng and Mackenzie Myers added strong second place finishes in the 100 butterfyl and 100 breaststroke, respectively.  Mackenzie's breaststroke was his fastest in-season time ever.
 
All three of our boys' relays finished behind Centennial, but we were very pleased with some of our splits.  Kellon Patey swam his fastest 50 backstroke leading off the 200 medley relay (26.6), and Joshua Twillie anchored the 200 freestlye relay in 22.8, which is promising for our goals of scoring at the State meet.
 
Lifetime best swims came Stuart Myers in the 50 freestyle and 100 breast, Jack Reed in the 50 and 100 freestyle, Mitchell Coverstone in the 50 freestyle, and Ben Werther in the 500 freestyle.
 
On the girls' side, Elena Escalas captured both the 200 IM and 100 butterfly.  Natalie TeSelle finished second in the 200 freestyle in her lifetime best, and Marina Escalas added a second place finish in the 100 breaststroke (as well as a nice butterfly split on the "B" 200 medley relay.  Our girls' 200 medley relay (Margaret Luffman, Elena Escalas, Natalie TeSelle, Trudy Zou) also won the event.
 
Other strong swims came from Jessica Mei, who dropped four seconds in the 200 IM.
 
With all of our Divisional dual meets in the books, we expect this win will secure our combined team the Divisional runner-up for the season.  The team now looks to prepare for the MTHSSA Region Championship, which is next Friday, January 30 at Centennial Sportsplex.  The team will bring 28 qualifiers to the meet this year, along with hopes of gaining additional qualifiers to our State team.
