USN battles among teams near and far

JK
On Saturday, the USN Swimming team made the short trip across town to Ensworth to compete with local teams Ensworth and Ravenwood High School, as well as St. George’s (Memphis) and St. Xavier (Louisville).  Although limited in some respects by illness, the Tigers put together some solid performances that brighten our prospects for the championship season.

On the girls’ side, individual wins were earned by freshman Margaret Luffman (100 backstroke) and senior Elena Escalas (100 butterfly).  Additionally, sophomore Trudy Zou (200 IM, 100 breaststroke) and Natalie TeSelle (500 freestyle) earned runner-up finishes, and the girls’ 200 medley relay (Luffman, Escalas, TeSelle, Zou) finished second behind St. George’s as well.

The boys had some strong swims amidst some very fast performances from St. Xavier and Ensworth. Curtis Patey dropped 2.5 seconds in his 100 freestyle, and Mitchell Coverstone swam a lifetime best in the 100 breaststroke to win his heat.  Seniors Kellon Patey and Mackenzie Myers, only a couple of weeks out of cross country season, showed themselves quickly getting their “sea legs” back and contributed two strong relay performances.

This being our last meet prior to entering our Divisional competition, one of our primary goals was to add to our list of State and Region qualifiers.  To that end, Natalie TeSelle added the State qualifying time in the 500 freestyle.  Betsy Nolan, Evelyn TeSelle, Claire Saxon, Jack Reed, Caroline Hollahan, and Katie Watke all earned new Region cuts.

New USN all-Top 10 swims:
-200 medley relay (Luffman, Escalas, TeSelle, Zou) (8th)
-Trudy Zou (9th in 200 IM, 5th in 100 breast)
-Margaret Luffman (100 back)
-Katie Watke (9th in 100 back)
-Kylee Hall (10th in 100 back)

Our swimmers of the meet were Foster Cook, who dropped four seconds in his 100 breaststroke and had two strong relays splits, and Effie Zuberer-Davis, who dropped 10 seconds in her 200 freestyle and added a best time in the 100 freestyle as well.

The team returns to competition on Tuesday, December 3, when we head to Brentwood to swim against Brentwood Academy and Christ Presbyterian Academy.
