USN opens divisional season with two wins

Boys and girls both win over B.A., CPA
The USN HS swimming team opened divisional competition on Tuesday in a double dual meet with Brentwood Academy and Christ Presbyterian Academy at Maryland Farms YMCA.  Since this meet was swum in a 25 meter pool, we tried to focus more on executing races correctly than on times.  Some of our swimmers found themselves competing in new, challenging races, and we were pleased with how we looked, even if the times weren't fantastic.

Our boys’ team posted wins over B.A. (109-59) and C.P.A. (111-38), and our girls won over B.A. (86-81) and C.P.A. (125-27), giving us the combined win.

On the girls’ side, senior captain Elena Escalas won the 200 IM and 100 freestyles.  Trudy Zou added a won in the 100 breaststroke, and our girls’ 400 freestyle relay (Margaret Luffman, Trudy, Natalie TeSelle, and Elena) took first place as well.  Our girls’ real story was in their depth; a series of second and third places from Jessica Mei, Margaret Luffman, Natalie TeSelle, Caroline Hollahan, and Katie Watke kept the team competitive, even when we couldn’t win an event.

The boys were led by senior captain Kellon Patey, our only double winner of the boys’ meet.  Kellon won both the 200 IM and 100 backstroke.  Our other individual event wins came from Joshua Twillie (200 freestyle), Neil Zheng (100 butterfly), and Kevin Chen (400 freestyle).  Additionally, our boys’ 200 medley relay team (Kellon, Joshua, Neil, and Curtis Patey) took first place, as did our “B” 400 free relay (Henry Standard, Ben Werther, Jack Reed, and Mitchell Coverstone).

Other highlights of the boys’ meet included Curtis Patey earning his first State qualifying time in the 50 freestyle,  Ben Werther’s successful 100 butterfly-400 freestyle double, and Henry Standard’s improved execution in his first 400 freestyle.

Our swimmers of the meet were Curtis Patey and Ky Hall.  Curtis joined the State team for the first time, and Ky negotiated a goggle malfunction in the 100 backstroke and still managed to have a strong race.

The team returns to competition on Tuesday, December 9, in a double dual meet with Pope John Paul II and St. Cecilia.
