USN Swimming opens the season at Ensworth

5 swimmers join the State team; girls relays lead the way.
The USN Swimming Tigers opened the 2014-2015 season at Ensworth last Saturday in an early season invitational featuring most of the teams in our division: Centennial, CPA, St. Cecilia, Father Ryan, and Ensworth.  Although the team scores didn’t count towards our division rankings and many of our swimmers are still gearing up for their fall sport championships, the meet was very productive one to have under our belt.

The USN girls team showed some nice speed in decisively winning both the 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays.  Margaret Luffman, Elena Escalas, Natalie TeSelle and Trudy Zou earned spot on the USN Top 10 list in the medley relay, posting the fastest dual meet time in school history (2:00.64).  Notably, Margaret's backstroke leadoff split was the 4th fastest in school history.

Individually, Elena won the 50 freestyle, earning her first top USN all-time Top 10 time in the event (26.17).  Elena finished third in the 100 backstroke, cracking the Top 10 in that event as well.  Trudy earned second-place finishes and lifetime bests in the 200 freestyle and 100 breaststroke and contributed strong freestyle splits to both winning relays.

Natalie also earned a State qualifying time in the 100 fly, and new Region qualifying times came from Jessica Mei, Allison Fuerst, and Katie Watke.

On the boys’ side, our only individual win of the day came from Joshua Twillie, who tied for first in the 50 freestyle, just .01 of a second off the State qualifying time.  Joshua added a second place finish in the 100 freestyle, along with two solid relay splits on our 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays.

Other strong swims came from Neil Zheng, who earned a State qualifying time in the 100 fly and contributed a lifetime best split on the 400 freestyle relay, and Henry Standard, who earned his first two Region qualifying times in the 50 and 100 freestyles (and dropped ten seconds off his MS best time in the 100 freestyles).  Kevin Chen, Tebyn Chittester, Mitchell Coverstone, Curtis Patey, and Ben Werther also earned new Region qualifying times.

Our swimmers of the meet were Trudy Zou and Henry Standard.

The Tigers return to competition on November 11, when we host Hillsboro HS here at the historic USN pool.  This meet will be our first hosted HS meet since 2010!
