The USN HS and MS swimming teams traveled to Brentwood on Wednesday night to take on the Brentwood Academy AquaEagles.  This was our first combined HS/MS meet, and we enjoyed getting to watch multiple generations of USN swimmers cheering and competing together.

The high school team emerged with a combined 183-151 win over BA, which was driven by our boys’ 129-41 win.  Our girls lost 110-54 but scored enough points to help us to the combined win.

The USN high school boys took first place in all 11 swimming events.  Seniors Nicholas Ng (200 IM, 100 butterfly), Mark Rusznak (200 freestyle, 50 freestyle), and Daniel Pannock (100 freestyle, 100 backstroke) won two events each.  The remaining two individual events were won by senior Will Jones, who won the 100 breaststroke, and junior Neil Zheng, who won the 400 freestyle in his first time racing the event.

Both our 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays also finished 1-2, thanks to contributions by these five, as well as Ben Tattersfield, Mackenzie Myers, Kellon Patey, Rob Dobie, Dylan Young, and Kevin Chen, and the “A” 200 freestyle relay (Dobie, Zheng, Patey, Ng) took first place as well.

With numerous girls not swimming because of illness, it was difficult for our girls to hang with the B.A. squad.  Junior Elena Escalas was our only won the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke.  Sophomore Effie Zuberer-Davis had a strong 400 freestyle, and freshman Trudy Zou had solid races in the 100 and 200 freestyles, finishing second in both.

Our swimmers of the meet were Elena Escalas and Rob Dobie.  Elena posted two strong relay splits in addition to her two individual swims.  Rob scored in both the 50 and 100 freestyles (completing a 1-2-3 sweep in the 100) and brought great energy to our winning 200 and 400 freestyle relays.

The Tigers return to the pool on Saturday at the Excel Invitational, in search of more State and Region qualifying times.
