The USN Swimming Tigers traveled to Murfreesboro on Thursday to take on Riverdale High School. After eight and a half weeks of training, we were eager to get a competition under our belts. Riverdale’s pool is an intense and exciting atmosphere, and the Tigers took advantage of it, winning 173.5-165.5.

The girls’ team raced very well but lost, 98-72. Our girls did, however, win five individual events. Senior Elena Escalas (200 IM, 100 free) and sophomore Natalie TeSelle (100 fly, 500 free) won two each, while freshman Trudy Zou won the 100 breastroke. The girls’ 200 medley relay (Zou, Escalas, TeSelle, and Marina Escalas) also won, as did the 400 freestyle relay (Marie Gerber, Zou, TeSelle, Elena Escalas).

Notably, the girls earned four swims on the USN all-time Top 10 list: The 200 medley relay (8th), Elena’s 100 freestyle (7th), and Trudy and Marina’s 100 breaststroke swims (9th and 10th, respectively).

We were particularly impressed at our girls’ ability to race well in new events. Marie swam a very competitive first 200 freestyle, earning a new Region cut. Renata Aguilar scored in both the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke, and Puja Jagasia had a good 100 backstroke.  Fidan Baycora had two strong swims, improving significantly in both the 50 free and 100 breast.

The boys’ team won 101.5-65.5, capturing four of the eight individual events in the process. Seniors Nicholas Ng (200 IM, 100 fly) and Mark Rusznak (200 free, 500 free) won two each.  These twp joined senior Will Jones and sophomore Kellon Patey to win the 200 medley relay. The boys 200 freestyle relay (Mackenzie Myers, Daniel Pannock, Neil Zheng, and Ben Tattersfield) and 400 freestyle relay (Ng, Tattersfield, Patey, Rusznak) also won their events. The boys’ 400 freestyle relay joined the USN all-time top 10 list with the 8th fastest time in school history (and USN’s fastest dual meet swim ever).

Other outstanding swims came from Ben Werther, who dropped eight seconds in his 200 IM and scored points his first 500 freestyle; Rob Dobie, who contributed strong swims to our relays in his first high school meet; and Mitchell Coverstone, who earned his first Region qualifying time in the 100 breaststroke.

Our swimmers of the meet were Ben Werther and Fidan Baycora, each of whom posted two lifetime best times after making significant strides in their training over the past 8 weeks.

Special thanks to AgonSwim for getting us suited up, and to Mr. Begashaw Asfaw for getting us to the meet and back safely. The Tigers will take a group to the McCallie Invitational next Saturday, and will return for our next dual meet on Wednesday, December 4.
