Rusznak breaks school record in the 500 freestyle; Zheng and Pannock earn new State times.
The USN Swimming team traveled to Brentwood to compete in the 2013 Excel Invitational.  In one of
our final tune-ups before our championship season, we looked to add to our State and Region qualifying totals and emerged with two new State swimmers and one new Region swimmer.

The boys finished fifth overall, narrowly behind the MTHEA Makos and Oakland High School, and the combined team finished sixth overall.

The girls team was led by Elena Escalas.  Elena won the 100 butterfly and finished third in a very close 100 breaststroke race, both of which were strong in-season swims.

Other strong swims came from Natalie TeSelle, who dropped seven seconds in the 500 freestyle, earning a spot on the USN All-time Top 10 list (10th); senior captain Sophie Campbell, who dropped four seconds in the 100 breast and earned her first Region cut; and Julianna Lewis, who picked up a new Region cut in the 100 freestyle.  Other lifetime bests came from Logan Sweet, Natascha Heckers, Fidan Baycora, Effie Zuberer-Davis.

On the boys’ side, Mark Rusnnak earned two top-3 swims, finishing second in the 500 freestyle and breaking his own school record in the process, and third in the 100 backstroke.  Nicholas Ng  finished fourth in the 200 IM and 100 butterfly, and the boys’ relays all placed in the top 8.

Neil Zheng and Daniel Pannock each earned their first State qualifying times in the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke, respectively.  Neil’s swim earned him his first spot on the USN all-time Top 10 list (10th).  Will Allen (50 freestyle) and Tebyn Chittester (100 free) earned new Region qualifying times.  Other lifetime bests came from Fred Crumbo, Ben Tattersfield, Will Jones, Ben Werther, Ben Ghertner, John Spence, and  Kevin Chen.

Our swimmers of the meet were Mark Rusznak, who broke his own school record in the 500 freestyle with a strong in-season swim, and Caroline Hollahan, who had four lifetime bests on the day.

The Tigers return to competition on Wednesday against Hume-Fogg, which will be our Senior Day dual meet, then look ahead to the Region and State Championship meets.
