Last night, FRA/USN played their best game of the season, shutting out Ensworth/
Goodpasture 7-0 at A-Game Sportsplex.
The scoring began early and often as freshman Logan Orem gave the Panther's what
turned out to be the only goal they would need with an beautiful unassisted goal off the faceoff
at the 11 minute mark of the 1st period. Orem then followed it with his second of the
game on a feed from junior Andrew Looney and then with less than a second to go in the
first period, he completed the hat trick with another strong move with assists going to
junior co-captain Alex Melin and 8th grader Christian Smead-Williamson. Logan leads
the league in scoring with 15 goals after tonight’s performance.
In the second period, the Panthers continued to apply pressure with a strong forecheck
and other players scored some goals. Junior Sterling Schwartz scored his third of the
year with assists to Orem and 8th grader Will Frankenfield, then 8th grader Hunter Matthews
tallied his first of the year with assists to freshman Jake Jones and senior assistant
captain Ben Brinton. In the 3rd period, it was Smead-Williamson with his first goal with
an assist from Schwartz and finally, co-captain Melin picked up his second goal of the
year going "roof daddy" on the Ensworth goalie with a beautiful goal as Schwartz picked
up his 2nd assist and 3rd point of the evening. Through it all, senior co-captain Jon Rydburg
gave the Panther's another excellent game in net as he stopped 28 shots to pick up
his second shut-out for the year.
After the game coach Rich Melin sounded equally surprised and impressed by the effort.
"With a young team you're never sure game to game what to expect and tonight we
showed that the win last Friday was just the first step and we were hungry for more. We
consistently got pucks deep and forced turnovers all night with a good forecheck. It won't
show up on the score sheet but the efforts of junior's Nic Chalos, Dillon Korpman and
Taylor Maitland, sophomore Jake Conley and freshman Jack Reed were solid. They got
to the right places, took the body, forced turnovers and were hard to play against while
8th grader Jackson Thomas showed versatility going back and forth between wing and
defense on penalty kills."
But what's also catching the eyes of hockey observer's is the selfless play of important
players who are starting to absorb the system of hockey the coaches are teaching. Coach
Melin wrapped his comments up with this observation, "When you see the selfless play of
Andrew Looney, Sterling Schwartz and Jake Jones and what they're doing on the ice, it's
gratifying. Each made plays tonight that we weren't doing a month ago and the credit
goes to them, the rest of the team and to my coaches (Paul Gant and David Eckert) who
are working hard to help everyone to execute a system that takes advantage of our abilities".
The game marked a number of firsts for the Panthers. First career goals (Hunter Matthews,
Christian Smead-Williamson); first career assists (Williamson, Jake Jones and
Will Frankenfield) as well as a milestone - an FRA all-time record 4th shut-out for Jon
Rydburg. The win was FRA/USN's 6th straight over Ensworth and at least temporarily
moved the Panther's ahead of Blackman/CPA into 3rd place in the GNASH Blue Division
on the season. The next game will either be next Wednesday night against Wilson-
Central or next Friday against Independence-Summit pending a request to move a game
due to the final exam schedule.
